A Field Khettasutta
āMendicants, when a field has eight factors a seed sown in it is not very fruitful or rewarding or productive. āAį¹į¹haį¹ gasamannÄgate, bhikkhave, khette bÄ«jaį¹ vuttaį¹ na mahapphalaį¹ hoti na mahassÄdaį¹ na phÄtiseyyaį¹. What eight factors does it have? Kathaį¹ aį¹į¹haį¹ gasamannÄgate? Itās when a field has mounds and ditches. It has stones and gravel. Itās salty. It doesnāt have deep furrows. And itās not equipped with water inlets, water outlets, irrigation channels, and boundaries. Idha, bhikkhave, khettaį¹ unnÄmaninnÄmi ca hoti, pÄsÄį¹asakkharikaƱca hoti, Å«saraƱca hoti, na ca gambhÄ«rasitaį¹ hoti, na Äyasampannaį¹ hoti, na apÄyasampannaį¹ hoti, na mÄtikÄsampannaį¹ hoti, na mariyÄdasampannaį¹ hoti. In the same way, when an ascetic or brahmin has eight factors a gift given to them is not very fruitful or beneficial or brilliant or bountiful. Evamevaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, aį¹į¹haį¹ gasamannÄgatesu samaį¹abrÄhmaį¹esu dÄnaį¹ dinnaį¹ na mahapphalaį¹ hoti na mahÄnisaį¹saį¹ na mahÄjutikaį¹ na mahÄvipphÄraį¹. What eight factors do they have? Kathaį¹ aį¹į¹haį¹ gasamannÄgatesu? Itās when an ascetic or brahmin has right view, right purpose, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right immersion. When an ascetic or brahmin has these eight factors a gift given to them is very fruitful and beneficial and brilliant and bountiful. Evaį¹ aį¹į¹haį¹ gasamannÄgatesu, bhikkhave, samaį¹abrÄhmaį¹esu dÄnaį¹ dinnaį¹ mahapphalaį¹ hoti mahÄnisaį¹saį¹ mahÄjutikaį¹ mahÄvipphÄranti.
When the field is excellent, YathÄpi khette sampanne, and the seed sown in it is excellent, pavuttÄ bÄ«jasampadÄ; and the rainfall is excellent, Deve sampÄdayantamhi, the crop of grain will be excellent. hoti dhaƱƱassa sampadÄ.
The absence of crop loss is excellent, AnÄ«tisampadÄ hoti, its growth is excellent, virūḷhÄ« bhavati sampadÄ; its maturation is excellent, VepullasampadÄ hoti, and its fruit is excellent. phalaį¹ ve hoti sampadÄ.
So too, when you give excellent food Evaį¹ sampannasÄ«lesu, to those of excellent ethics, dinnÄ bhojanasampadÄ; it leads to many excellences, SampadÄnaį¹ upaneti, for what you did was excellent. sampannaį¹ hissa taį¹ kataį¹.
So if a person wants excellence, TasmÄ sampadamÄkaį¹ khÄ«, let them excel in this. sampannatthÅ«dha puggalo; You should frequent those with excellent wisdom, SampannapaƱƱe sevetha, so that your own excellence will flourish. evaį¹ ijjhanti sampadÄ.
Excelling in knowledge and conduct, VijjÄcaraį¹asampanne, and having excellence of mind, laddhÄ cittassa sampadaį¹; you perform excellent deeds, Karoti kammasampadaį¹, and gain excellent benefits. labhati catthasampadaį¹.
Truly knowing the world, LokaṠñatvÄ yathÄbhÅ«taį¹, and having attained excellence of view, pappuyya diį¹į¹hisampadaį¹; one who excels in mind proceeds, MaggasampadamÄgamma, relying on excellence in the path. yÄti sampannamÄnaso.
Shaking off all stains, OdhunitvÄ malaį¹ sabbaį¹, and attaining the excellence of extinguishment, patvÄ nibbÄnasampadaį¹; youāre freed from all sufferings: Muccati sabbadukkhehi, this is complete excellence.ā sÄ hoti sabbasampadÄāti.
