Shackles of the Heart Cetasovinibandhasutta

ā€œMendicants, there are these five shackles of the heart. ā€œPaƱcime, bhikkhave, cetasovinibandhā. What five? Katame paƱca? Firstly, a mendicant isn’t free of greed for sensual pleasures. … Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu kāmesu avÄ«tarāgo hoti …pe… These are the five shackles of the heart. ime kho, bhikkhave, paƱca cetasovinibandhā.

To give up these five shackles of the heart you should develop the four bases of psychic power. Imesaṁ kho, bhikkhave, paƱcannaṁ cetasovinibandhānaṁ pahānāya ime cattāro iddhipādā bhāvetabbā. What four? Katame cattāro? It’s when a mendicant develops the basis of psychic power that has immersion due to enthusiasm, and active effort. Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu chandasamādhipadhānasaį¹…khārasamannāgataṁ iddhipādaṁ bhāveti, They develop the basis of psychic power that has immersion due to energy, and active effort. vÄ«riyasamādhi … They develop the basis of psychic power that has immersion due to mental development, and active effort. cittasamādhi … They develop the basis of psychic power that has immersion due to inquiry, and active effort. vÄ«maṁsāsamādhipadhānasaį¹…khārasamannāgataṁ iddhipādaṁ bhāveti. To give up these five shackles of the heart you should develop these four bases of psychic power.ā€ Imesaṁ kho, bhikkhave, paƱcannaṁ cetasovinibandhānaṁ pahānāya ime cattāro iddhipādā bhāvetabbÄā€ti.
