Accomplished in Ethics Sīlasampannasutta
This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard. VuttaƱhetaį¹ bhagavatÄ vuttamarahatÄti me sutaį¹:
āMendicants, take a mendicant who is accomplished in ethics, immersion, wisdom, freedom, and the knowledge and vision of freedom. They advise and instruct. They educate, encourage, fire up, and inspire, and can rightly explain the true teaching. Even the sight of those mendicants is very helpful, I say. āYe te, bhikkhave, bhikkhÅ« sÄ«lasampannÄ samÄdhisampannÄ paƱƱÄsampannÄ vimuttisampannÄ vimuttiƱÄį¹adassanasampannÄ ovÄdakÄ viƱƱÄpakÄ sandassakÄ samÄdapakÄ samuttejakÄ sampahaį¹sakÄ alaį¹samakkhÄtÄro saddhammassa dassanampahaį¹, bhikkhave, tesaį¹ bhikkhÅ«naį¹ bahÅ«pakÄraį¹ vadÄmi; Even to hear them, savanampahaį¹, bhikkhave, tesaį¹ bhikkhÅ«naį¹ bahÅ«pakÄraį¹ vadÄmi; approach them, upasaį¹ kamanampahaį¹, bhikkhave, tesaį¹ bhikkhÅ«naį¹ bahÅ«pakÄraį¹ vadÄmi; pay homage to them, payirupÄsanampahaį¹, bhikkhave, tesaį¹ bhikkhÅ«naį¹ bahÅ«pakÄraį¹ vadÄmi; recollect them, anussaraį¹ampahaį¹, bhikkhave, tesaį¹ bhikkhÅ«naį¹ bahÅ«pakÄraį¹ vadÄmi; or go forth after them is very helpful, I say. anupabbajjampahaį¹, bhikkhave, tesaį¹ bhikkhÅ«naį¹ bahÅ«pakÄraį¹ vadÄmi. Why is that? Taį¹ kissa hetu? For one who frequents and associates with such mendicants, their incomplete spectrum of ethics is completed. Their incomplete spectrum of immersion ⦠wisdom ⦠freedom ⦠knowledge and vision of freedom is completed. TathÄrÅ«pe, bhikkhave, bhikkhÅ« sevato bhajato payirupÄsato aparipÅ«ropi sÄ«lakkhandho bhÄvanÄpÄripÅ«riį¹ gacchati, aparipÅ«ropi samÄdhikkhandho bhÄvanÄpÄripÅ«riį¹ gacchati, aparipÅ«ropi paƱƱÄkkhandho bhÄvanÄpÄripÅ«riį¹ gacchati, aparipÅ«ropi vimuttikkhandho bhÄvanÄpÄripÅ«riį¹ gacchati, aparipÅ«ropi vimuttiƱÄį¹adassanakkhandho bhÄvanÄpÄripÅ«riį¹ gacchati. Such mendicants are called āteachersā, ācaravan leadersā, āstrife-discardersā, ādispellers of darknessā, ābringers of lightā, āluminariesā, ālampsā, ācandlebearersā, ābeaconsā, ānoble onesā, and āclear-eyed onesā.ā EvarÅ«pÄ ca te, bhikkhave, bhikkhÅ« satthÄrotipi vuccanti, satthavÄhÄtipi vuccanti, raį¹aƱjahÄtipi vuccanti, tamonudÄtipi vuccanti, ÄlokakarÄtipi vuccanti, obhÄsakarÄtipi vuccanti, pajjotakarÄtipi vuccanti, ukkÄdhÄrÄtipi vuccanti, pabhaį¹ karÄtipi vuccanti, ariyÄtipi vuccanti, cakkhumantotipi vuccantÄ«āti.
The Buddha spoke this matter. Etamatthaį¹ bhagavÄ avoca. On this it is said: Tatthetaį¹ iti vuccati:
āThis is a reason for joy āPÄmojjakaraį¹aį¹ į¹hÄnaį¹, for those who understand: etaį¹ hoti vijÄnataį¹; that is, those who are evolved, Yadidaį¹ bhÄvitattÄnaį¹, the noble ones living righteously. ariyÄnaį¹ dhammajÄ«vinaį¹.
They illuminate the true teaching, Te jotayanti saddhammaį¹, beacons beaming light, bhÄsayanti pabhaį¹ karÄ; the attentive ones bringing light, Älokakaraį¹Ä dhÄ«rÄ, clear-eyed ones with strife discarded. cakkhumanto raį¹aƱjahÄ.
Having heard their instruction, Yesaį¹ ve sÄsanaį¹ sutvÄ, the astute, understanding rightly, sammadaƱƱÄya paį¹įøitÄ; directly know the ending of rebirth, JÄtikkhayamabhiƱƱÄya, they come not back to future lives.ā nÄgacchanti punabbhavanāti.
This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard. Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatÄ, iti me sutanti.
