The Arising of Craving Taṇhuppādasutta

This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard. Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ:

“Mendicants, there are four things that give rise to craving in a mendicant. “Cattārome, bhikkhave, taṇhuppādā, yattha bhikkhuno taṇhā uppajjamānā uppajjati. What four? Katame cattāro? For the sake of robes, Cīvarahetu vā, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno taṇhā uppajjamānā uppajjati; almsfood, piṇḍapātahetu vā, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno taṇhā uppajjamānā uppajjati; lodgings, senāsanahetu vā, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno taṇhā uppajjamānā uppajjati; or rebirth in this or that state. itibhavābhavahetu vā, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno taṇhā uppajjamānā uppajjati. These are the four things that give rise to craving in a mendicant.” Ime kho, bhikkhave, cattāro taṇhuppādā yattha bhikkhuno taṇhā uppajjamānā uppajjatī”ti.

The Buddha spoke this matter. Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca. On this it is said: Tatthetaṁ iti vuccati:

“Craving is a person’s partner “Taṇhādutiyo puriso, as they transmigrate on this long journey. dīghamaddhāna saṁsaraṁ; They go from this state to another, Itthabhāvaññathābhāvaṁ, but don’t escape transmigration. saṁsaraṁ nātivattati.

Knowing this danger, Etamādīnavaṁ ñatvā, that craving is the cause of suffering—taṇhaṁ dukkhassa sambhavaṁ; rid of craving, free of grasping, Vītataṇho anādāno, a mendicant would wander mindful.” sato bhikkhu paribbaje”ti.

This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard. Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti.

Chaṭṭhaṁ.
