Very Helpful BahukÄrasutta
This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard. VuttaƱhetaį¹ bhagavatÄ vuttamarahatÄti me sutaį¹:
āMendicants, brahmins and householders are very helpful to you, as they provide you with robes, almsfood, lodgings, and medicines and supplies for the sick. āBahukÄrÄ, bhikkhave, brÄhmaį¹agahapatikÄ tumhÄkaį¹ ye vo paccupaį¹į¹hitÄ cÄ«varapiį¹įøapÄtasenÄsanagilÄnapaccayabhesajjaparikkhÄrehi. And you are very helpful to brahmins and householders, as you teach them the Dhamma thatās good in the beginning, good in the middle, and good in the end, meaningful and well-phrased. And you reveal a spiritual practice thatās entirely full and pure. Tumhepi, bhikkhave, bahukÄrÄ brÄhmaį¹agahapatikÄnaį¹ yaį¹ nesaį¹ dhammaį¹ desetha ÄdikalyÄį¹aį¹ majjhekalyÄį¹aį¹ pariyosÄnakalyÄį¹aį¹ sÄtthaį¹ sabyaƱjanaį¹, kevalaparipuį¹į¹aį¹ parisuddhaį¹ brahmacariyaį¹ pakÄsetha. That is how this spiritual path is lived supporting each other in order to cross over the flood and make a complete end of suffering.ā Evamidaį¹, bhikkhave, aƱƱamaƱƱaį¹ nissÄya brahmacariyaį¹ vussati oghassa nittharaį¹atthÄya sammÄ dukkhassa antakiriyÄyÄāti.
The Buddha spoke this matter. Etamatthaį¹ bhagavÄ avoca. On this it is said: Tatthetaį¹ iti vuccati:
āThe home-dweller and the homeless, āSÄgÄrÄ anagÄrÄ ca, supporting each other, ubho aƱƱoƱƱanissitÄ; find success in the true teaching, ÄrÄdhayanti saddhammaį¹, the supreme sanctuary from the yoke. yogakkhemaį¹ anuttaraį¹.
The homeless receive requisites SÄgÄresu ca cÄ«varaį¹, from the home-dwellers: paccayaį¹ sayanÄsanaį¹; robes and lodgings AnagÄrÄ paį¹icchanti, to shelter from harsh conditions. parissayavinodanaį¹.
Relying on the Holy One, Sugataį¹ pana nissÄya, layfolk and householders of discernment gahaį¹į¹hÄ gharamesino; place faith in the perfected ones, SaddahÄnÄ arahataį¹, meditators of noble wisdom. ariyapaƱƱÄya jhÄyino.
Having practiced the teaching here, Idha dhammaį¹ caritvÄna, the path that goes to a good place, maggaį¹ sugatigÄminaį¹; they delight in the heavenly realm, Nandino devalokasmiį¹, enjoying all the pleasures they desire.ā modanti kÄmakÄminoāti.
This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard. Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatÄ, iti me sutanti.
