A Trainee (1st) Paį¹hamasekhasutta
This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard. VuttaƱhetaį¹ bhagavatÄ vuttamarahatÄti me sutaį¹:
āTaking into account interior factors, mendicants, I do not see a single one that is so very helpful as rational application of mind for a trainee mendicant who hasnāt achieved their heartās desire, but lives aspiring to the supreme sanctuary from the yoke. āSekhassa, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno appattamÄnasassa anuttaraį¹ yogakkhemaį¹ patthayamÄnassa viharato ajjhattikaį¹ aį¹ ganti karitvÄ nÄƱƱaį¹ ekaį¹ gampi samanupassÄmi yaį¹ evaį¹ bahÅ«pakÄraį¹ yathayidaį¹, bhikkhave, yoniso manasikÄro. A mendicant rationally applying the mind gives up the unskillful and develops the skillful.ā Yoniso, bhikkhave, bhikkhu manasi karonto akusalaį¹ pajahati, kusalaį¹ bhÄvetÄ«āti.
The Buddha spoke this matter. Etamatthaį¹ bhagavÄ avoca. On this it is said: Tatthetaį¹ iti vuccati:
āThere is nothing so helpful āYonisomanasikÄro, for a trainee mendicant dhammo sekhassa bhikkhuno; aspiring for the ultimate goal NatthaƱƱo evaį¹ bahukÄro, as rational application of mind. uttamatthassa pattiyÄ; Striving rationally, a mendicant Yoniso padahaį¹ bhikkhu, attains the end of suffering.ā khayaį¹ dukkhassa pÄpuį¹eāti.
This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard. Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatÄ, iti me sutanti.
Chaį¹į¹haį¹.
