A Trainee (2nd) Dutiyasekhasutta
This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard. VuttaƱhetaį¹ bhagavatÄ vuttamarahatÄti me sutaį¹:
āTaking into account exterior factors, mendicants, I do not see a single one that is so very helpful as good friendship for a trainee mendicant who hasnāt achieved their heartās desire, but lives aspiring to the supreme sanctuary from the yoke. āSekhassa, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno appattamÄnasassa anuttaraį¹ yogakkhemaį¹ patthayamÄnassa viharato bÄhiraį¹ aį¹ ganti karitvÄ nÄƱƱaį¹ ekaį¹ gampi samanupassÄmi yaį¹ evaį¹ bahÅ«pakÄraį¹ yathayidaį¹, bhikkhave, kalyÄį¹amittatÄ. A mendicant who has good friends gives up the unskillful and develops the skillful.ā KalyÄį¹amitto, bhikkhave, bhikkhu akusalaį¹ pajahati, kusalaį¹ bhÄvetÄ«āti.
The Buddha spoke this matter. Etamatthaį¹ bhagavÄ avoca. On this it is said: Tatthetaį¹ iti vuccati:
āA mendicant with good friends āKalyÄį¹amitto yo bhikkhu, is reverential and respectful sappatisso sagÄravo; when their friends are speaking, Karaį¹ mittÄnaį¹ vacanaį¹, aware and mindful. sampajÄno patissato; Gradually they would attain PÄpuį¹e anupubbena, the ending of all fetters.ā sabbasaį¹yojanakkhayanāti.
This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard. Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatÄ, iti me sutanti.
Sattamaį¹.
