The Benefits of Training Sikkhānisaṁsasutta

This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard. Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ:

“Mendicants, live with training as benefit, with wisdom as overseer, with freedom as core, and with mindfulness as ruler. “Sikkhānisaṁsā, bhikkhave, viharatha paññuttarā vimuttisārā satādhipateyyā. A mendicant who lives in this way can expect one of two results: Sikkhānisaṁsānaṁ, bhikkhave, viharataṁ paññuttarānaṁ vimuttisārānaṁ satādhipateyyānaṁ dvinnaṁ phalānaṁ aññataraṁ phalaṁ pāṭikaṅkhaṁ—enlightenment in this very life, or if there’s something left over, non-return.” diṭṭheva dhamme aññā, sati vā upādisese anāgāmitā”ti.

The Buddha spoke this matter. Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca. On this it is said: Tatthetaṁ iti vuccati:

“The training fulfilled, not liable to decline, “Paripuṇṇasikkhaṁ apahānadhammaṁ, overseen by wisdom, seer of rebirth’s end; Paññuttaraṁ jātikhayantadassiṁ; that sage bears their final body; Taṁ ve muniṁ antimadehadhāriṁ, they have disposed of Māra, I declare, <j>and gone beyond old age. Mārañjahaṁ brūmi jarāya pāraguṁ.

Therefore be always enjoying absorption, <j>immersed in samādhi, Tasmā sadā jhānaratā samāhitā, energetic, seers of rebirth’s end. Ātāpino jātikhayantadassino; Having overcome Māra and his armies, mendicants, Māraṁ sasenaṁ abhibhuyya bhikkhavo, go beyond birth and death.” Bhavatha jātimaraṇassa pāragā”ti.

This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard. Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti.

Navamaṁ.
