Craving Taṇhāsutta

This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard. Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ:

“Mendicants, there are these three cravings. “Tisso imā, bhikkhave, taṇhā. What three? Katamā tisso? Craving for sensual pleasures, craving for existence, and craving for nonexistence. Kāmataṇhā, bhavataṇhā, vibhavataṇhā—These are the three cravings.” imā kho, bhikkhave, tisso taṇhā”ti.

The Buddha spoke this matter. Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca. On this it is said: Tatthetaṁ iti vuccati:

“Bound by craving, minds full of desire “Taṇhāyogena saṁyuttā, for rebirth in this or that state, rattacittā bhavābhave; yoked by Māra’s yoke, these people Te yogayuttā mārassa, find no sanctuary from the yoke. ayogakkhemino janā; Sentient beings continue to transmigrate, Sattā gacchanti saṁsāraṁ, with ongoing birth and death. jātīmaraṇagāmino.

Those who have given up craving, Ye ca taṇhaṁ pahantvāna, rid of craving for rebirth in this or that state, vītataṇhā bhavābhave; they in this world have truly crossed over, Te ve pāraṅgatā loke, having reached the ending of defilements.” ye pattā āsavakkhayan”ti.

This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard. Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti.

Navamaṁ.
