23. The training rule on the nuns’ dwelling place 23. Bhikkhunupassayasikkhāpada

Origin story

First sub-story

At one time when the Buddha was staying in the Sakyan country in the Banyan Tree Monastery at Kapilavatthu, Tena samayena buddho bhagavā sakkesu viharati kapilavatthusmiṁ nigrodhārāme. the monks from the group of six went to the nuns’ dwelling place and instructed the nuns from the group of six. Tena kho pana samayena chabbaggiyā bhikkhÅ« bhikkhunupassayaṁ upasaį¹…kamitvā chabbaggiyā bhikkhuniyo ovadanti.

Soon afterwards, other nuns said to the nuns from the group of six, Bhikkhuniyo chabbaggiyā bhikkhuniyo etadavocuį¹ā€”ā€œCome, venerables, let’s go to the instruction.ā€ ā€œethāyye, ovādaṁ gamissāmÄā€ti.

ā€œThere’s no need. The monks from the group of six came and instructed us right here.ā€ ā€œYampi mayaṁ, ayye, gaccheyyāma ovādassa kāraṇā, ayyā chabbaggiyā idheva āgantvā amhe ovadantÄ«ā€ti.

The nuns complained and criticized the monks from the group of six, Bhikkhuniyo ujjhāyanti khiyyanti vipācentiā€”ā€œHow could the monks from the group of six go and instruct the nuns at their dwelling place?ā€ ā€œkathaƱhi nāma chabbaggiyā bhikkhÅ« bhikkhunupassayaṁ upasaį¹…kamitvā bhikkhuniyo ovadissantÄ«ā€ti. Then those nuns told the monks. Atha kho tā bhikkhuniyo bhikkhÅ«naṁ etamatthaṁ ārocesuṁ.

The monks of few desires complained and criticized those monks, Ye te bhikkhÅ« appicchā …pe… te ujjhāyanti khiyyanti vipācentiā€”ā€œHow could those monks do this?ā€ā€¦ ā€œkathaƱhi nāma chabbaggiyā bhikkhÅ« bhikkhunupassayaṁ upasaį¹…kamitvā bhikkhuniyo ovadissantÄ«ā€ti …pe… ā€œIs it true, monks, that you did this?ā€ ā€œsaccaṁ kira tumhe, bhikkhave, bhikkhunupassayaṁ upasaį¹…kamitvā bhikkhuniyo ovadathÄā€ti?

ā€œIt’s true, sir.ā€ ā€œSaccaṁ, bhagavÄā€ti.

The Buddha rebuked them … Vigarahi buddho bhagavā …pe… ā€œFoolish men, how could you do this? kathaƱhi nāma tumhe, moghapurisā, bhikkhunupassayaṁ upasaį¹…kamitvā bhikkhuniyo ovadissatha. This will affect people’s confidence ā€¦ā€ … Netaṁ, moghapurisā, appasannānaṁ vā pasādāya …pe… ā€œAnd, monks, this training rule should be recited like this: evaƱca pana, bhikkhave, imaṁ sikkhāpadaṁ uddiseyyātha—

Preliminary ruling

ā€˜If a monk goes to the nuns’ dwelling place, and then instructs them, he commits an offense entailing confession.ā€™ā€ ā€œYo pana bhikkhu bhikkhunupassayaṁ upasaį¹…kamitvā bhikkhuniyo ovadeyya, pācittiyanā€ti.

In this way the Buddha laid down this training rule for the monks. Evañcidaṁ bhagavatā bhikkhūnaṁ sikkhāpadaṁ paññattaṁ hoti.

Second sub-story

Soon afterwards Mahāpajāpati GotamÄ« became sick. Tena kho pana samayena mahāpajāpati gotamÄ« gilānā hoti. The senior monks went to see her Therā bhikkhÅ« yena mahāpajāpati gotamÄ« tenupasaį¹…kamiṁsu; and said, upasaį¹…kamitvā mahāpajāpatiṁ gotamiṁ etadavocuį¹ā€”ā€œ ā€œWe hope you’re bearing up, GotamÄ«, we hope you’re getting better?ā€ kacci, gotami, khamanÄ«yaṁ, kacci yāpanÄ«yanā€ti?

ā€œI’m not bearing up, venerables, and I’m not getting better. ā€œNa me, ayyā, khamanÄ«yaṁ na yāpanÄ«yaį¹ā€. Please give me a teaching.ā€ ā€œIį¹…ghayyā, dhammaṁ desethÄā€ti.

ā€œIt’s not allowable for us to go and teach the nuns at their dwelling place.ā€ And being afraid of wrongdoing, they did not teach her. ā€œNa, bhagini, kappati bhikkhunupassayaṁ upasaį¹…kamitvā bhikkhuniyo dhammaṁ desetunā€ti kukkuccāyantā na desesuṁ.

Soon afterwards, after robing up in the morning, the Buddha took his bowl and robe and went to Mahāpajāpati GotamÄ« where he sat down on the prepared seat. Atha kho bhagavā pubbaṇhasamayaṁ nivāsetvā pattacÄ«varamādāya yena mahāpajāpati gotamÄ« tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā paƱƱatte āsane nisÄ«di. He said to her, Nisajja kho bhagavā mahāpajāpatiṁ gotamiṁ etadavocaā€”ā€œI hope you’re bearing up, GotamÄ«, I hope you’re getting better?ā€ ā€œkacci, gotami, khamanÄ«yaṁ, kacci yāpanÄ«yanā€ti?

ā€œPreviously, sir, the senior monks would come and teach me, ā€œPubbe me, bhante, therā bhikkhÅ« āgantvā dhammaṁ desenti. and because of that I would be comfortable. Tena me phāsu hoti. But now that this has been prohibited by the Buddha, they don’t teach because they’re afraid of wrongdoing. Idāni panaā€”ā€˜bhagavatā paį¹­ikkhittan’ti, kukkuccāyantā na desenti. Because of that I’m not comfortable.ā€ Tena me na phāsu hotÄ«ā€ti.

After instructing, inspiring, and gladdening her with a teaching, the Buddha got up from his seat and left. Atha kho bhagavā mahāpajāpatiṁ gotamiṁ dhammiyā kathāya sandassetvā samādapetvā samuttejetvā sampahaṁsetvā uį¹­į¹­hāyāsanā pakkāmi. Soon afterwards the Buddha gave a teaching and addressed the monks: Atha kho bhagavā etasmiṁ nidāne etasmiṁ pakaraṇe dhammiṁ kathaṁ katvā bhikkhÅ« āmantesi—

ā€œMonks, I allow you to go and instruct a sick nun at her dwelling place. ā€œanujānāmi, bhikkhave, bhikkhunupassayaṁ upasaį¹…kamitvā gilānaṁ bhikkhuniṁ ovadituṁ.

And so, monks, this training rule should be recited like this: EvaƱca pana, bhikkhave, imaṁ sikkhāpadaṁ uddiseyyātha—

Final ruling

ā€˜If a monk goes to the nuns’ dwelling place and then instructs them, except on an appropriate occasion, he commits an offense entailing confession. ā€œYo pana bhikkhu bhikkhunupassayaṁ upasaį¹…kamitvā bhikkhuniyo ovadeyya, aƱƱatra samayā, pācittiyaṁ. This is the appropriate occasion: a nun is sick.ā€™ā€ Tatthāyaṁ samayo. Gilānā hoti bhikkhunī—ayaṁ tattha samayoā€ti.

wherever nuns stay, even for a single night. yattha bhikkhuniyo ekarattampi vasanti.

she has been given the full ordination by both Sanghas. ubhatosaį¹…ghe upasampannā.

A sick nun: Gilānā nāma bhikkhunī
she is not able to go to the instruction or to a formal meeting of the community. na sakkoti ovādāya vā saṁvāsāya vā gantuṁ.

Permutations

If she is fully ordained, and he perceives her as such, and he goes to her dwelling place and then instructs her, except on an appropriate occasion, he commits an offense entailing confession. Upasampannāya upasampannasaƱƱī bhikkhunupassayaṁ upasaį¹…kamitvā aƱƱatra samayā ovadati, āpatti pācittiyassa. If she is fully ordained, but he is unsure of it, and he goes to her dwelling place and then instructs her, except on an appropriate occasion, he commits an offense entailing confession. Upasampannāya vematiko bhikkhunupassayaṁ upasaį¹…kamitvā aƱƱatra samayā ovadati, āpatti pācittiyassa. If she is fully ordained, but he does not perceive her as such, and he goes to her dwelling place and then instructs her, except on an appropriate occasion, he commits an offense entailing confession. Upasampannāya anupasampannasaƱƱī bhikkhunupassayaṁ upasaį¹…kamitvā aƱƱatra samayā ovadati, āpatti pācittiyassa.

If he instructs her with another teaching, he commits an offense of wrong conduct. Aññena dhammena ovadati, āpatti dukkaṭassa. If he instructs a nun who is fully ordained only on one side, he commits an offense of wrong conduct. Ekatoupasampannāya ovadati, āpatti dukkaṭassa. If she is not fully ordained, but he perceives her as such, he commits an offense of wrong conduct. Anupasampannāya upasampannasaññī, āpatti dukkaṭassa. If she is not fully ordained, but he is unsure of it, he commits an offense of wrong conduct. Anupasampannāya vematiko, āpatti dukkaṭassa. If she is not fully ordained, and he does not perceive her as such, there is no offense. Anupasampannāya anupasampannasaññī, anāpatti.

Non-offenses

There is no offense: Anāpatti—if it is an appropriate occasion; samaye, if he recites; uddesaṁ dento, if he tests them; paripucchaṁ dento, if he recites when asked to do so; ā€œosārehi ayyÄā€ti vuccamāno osāreti, if he asks a question; paƱhaṁ pucchati, if he replies when asked a question; paƱhaṁ puį¹­į¹­ho katheti, if he is speaking for the benefit of someone else and the nuns listen in; aƱƱassatthāya bhaṇantaṁ bhikkhuniyo suṇanti, if it is to a trainee nun; sikkhamānāya, if it is to a novice nun; sāmaṇeriyā, if he is insane; ummattakassa, if he is the first offender. ādikammikassāti.
