Delight Nandatisutta

At Sāvatthī. Sāvatthinidānaṁ.

Standing to one side, that deity spoke this verse in the Buddha’s presence: Ekamantaṁ į¹­hitā kho sā devatā bhagavato santike imaṁ gāthaṁ abhāsi:

ā€œChildren bring you delight! ā€œNandati puttehi puttimā, Cattle also bring you delight! Gomā gohi tatheva nandati; For attachments are a man’s delight; UpadhÄ«hi narassa nandanā, without attachments there’s no delight.ā€ Na hi so nandati yo nirÅ«padhÄ«ā€ti.

ā€œChildren bring you sorrow. ā€œSocati puttehi puttimā, Cattle also bring you sorrow. Gomā gohi tatheva socati; For attachments are a man’s sorrow; UpadhÄ«hi narassa socanā, without attachments there are no sorrows.ā€ Na hi so socati yo nirÅ«padhÄ«ā€ti.
