The Congregation Samayasutta
So I have heard. Evaį¹ me sutaį¹āAt one time the Buddha was staying in the land of the Sakyans, in the Great Wood near Kapilavatthu, together with a large Saį¹ gha of five hundred mendicants, all of whom were perfected ones. ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavÄ sakkesu viharati kapilavatthusmiį¹ mahÄvane mahatÄ bhikkhusaį¹ ghena saddhiį¹ paƱcamattehi bhikkhusatehi sabbeheva arahantehi; And most of the deities from ten solar systems had gathered to see the Buddha and the Saį¹ gha of mendicants. dasahi ca lokadhÄtÅ«hi devatÄ yebhuyyena sannipatitÄ honti bhagavantaį¹ dassanÄya bhikkhusaį¹ ghaƱca.
Then four deities of the Pure Abodes, aware of what was happening, thought: Atha kho catunnaį¹ suddhÄvÄsakÄyikÄnaį¹ devatÄnaį¹ etadahosi: āayaį¹ kho bhagavÄ sakkesu viharati kapilavatthusmiį¹ mahÄvane mahatÄ bhikkhusaį¹ ghena saddhiį¹ paƱcamattehi bhikkhusatehi sabbeheva arahantehi; dasahi ca lokadhÄtÅ«hi devatÄ yebhuyyena sannipatitÄ honti bhagavantaį¹ dassanÄya bhikkhusaį¹ ghaƱca. āWhy donāt we go to the Buddha and each recite a verse in his presence?ā YannÅ«na mayampi yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹ kameyyÄma; upasaį¹ kamitvÄ bhagavato santike paccekaį¹ gÄthaį¹ bhÄseyyÄmÄāti.
Then, as easily as a strong person would extend or contract their arm, they vanished from the Pure Abodes and reappeared in front of the Buddha. Atha kho tÄ devatÄāseyyathÄpi nÄma balavÄ puriso samiƱjitaį¹ vÄ bÄhaį¹ pasÄreyya pasÄritaį¹ vÄ bÄhaį¹ samiƱjeyya; evamevaāsuddhÄvÄsesu devesu antarahitÄ bhagavato purato pÄturahesuį¹. They bowed to the Buddha and stood to one side. Atha kho tÄ devatÄ bhagavantaį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ ekamantaį¹ aį¹į¹haį¹su. Standing to one side, one deity spoke this verse in the Buddhaās presence: Ekamantaį¹ į¹hitÄ kho ekÄ devatÄ bhagavato santike imaį¹ gÄthaį¹ abhÄsi:
āThereās a great congregation in the woods, āMahÄsamayo pavanasmiį¹, where hosts of gods have assembled. DevakÄyÄ samÄgatÄ; Weāve come to this righteous congregation Ägatamha imaį¹ dhammasamayaį¹, to see the invincible Saį¹ gha!ā DakkhitÄye aparÄjitasaį¹ ghanāti.
Then another deity spoke this verse in the Buddhaās presence: Atha kho aparÄ devatÄ bhagavato santike imaį¹ gÄthaį¹ abhÄsi:
āThe mendicants there have immersion, āTatra bhikkhavo samÄdahaį¹su, theyāve straightened their own minds. Cittamattano ujukaį¹ akaį¹su; Like a charioteer holding the reins, SÄrathÄ«va nettÄni gahetvÄ, the astute ones protect their senses.ā IndriyÄni rakkhanti paį¹įøitÄāti.
Then another deity spoke this verse in the Buddhaās presence: Atha kho aparÄ devatÄ bhagavato santike imaį¹ gÄthaį¹ abhÄsi:
āThey snapped the post and snapped the cross-bar, āChetvÄ khÄ«laį¹ chetvÄ palighaį¹, unstirred, they tore out Indraās pillar. IndakhÄ«laį¹ Å«hacca manejÄ; They live pure and immaculate, Te caranti suddhÄ vimalÄ, the young giants tamed by the Clear-eyed One.ā CakkhumatÄ sudantÄ susunÄgÄāti.
Then another deity spoke this verse in the Buddhaās presence: Atha kho aparÄ devatÄ bhagavato santike imaį¹ gÄthaį¹ abhÄsi:
āAnyone who has gone to the Buddha for refuge āYe keci buddhaį¹ saraį¹aį¹ gatÄse, wonāt go to a plane of loss. Na te gamissanti apÄyabhÅ«miį¹; After giving up this human body, PahÄya mÄnusaį¹ dehaį¹, they swell the hosts of gods.ā DevakÄyaį¹ paripÅ«ressantÄ«āti.
