Suffering Dukkhasutta
At SÄvatthÄ«. SÄvatthiyaį¹ viharati.
āMendicants, I will teach you the origin and disappearance of suffering. āDukkhassa, bhikkhave, samudayaƱca atthaį¹ gamaƱca desessÄmi. Listen and apply your mind well, I will speak.ā Taį¹ suį¹Ätha, sÄdhukaį¹ manasi karotha, bhÄsissÄmÄ«āti.
āYes, sir,ā they replied. āEvaį¹, bhanteāti kho te bhikkhÅ« bhagavato paccassosuį¹. The Buddha said this: BhagavÄ etadavoca:
āAnd what, mendicants, is the origin of suffering? āKatamo ca, bhikkhave, dukkhassa samudayo? Eye consciousness arises dependent on the eye and sights. The meeting of the three is contact. CakkhuƱca paį¹icca rÅ«pe ca uppajjati cakkhuviƱƱÄį¹aį¹. Tiį¹į¹aį¹ saį¹ gati phasso. Contact is a requirement for feeling. PhassapaccayÄ vedanÄ; Feeling is a requirement for craving. ⦠vedanÄpaccayÄ taį¹hÄ. This is the origin of suffering. Ayaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, dukkhassa samudayo.
Ear consciousness arises dependent on the ear and sounds. ⦠SotaƱca paį¹icca sadde ca uppajjati sotaviƱƱÄį¹aį¹ ā¦pe⦠Nose consciousness arises dependent on the nose and smells. ⦠ghÄnaƱca paį¹icca gandhe ca ā¦pe⦠Tongue consciousness arises dependent on the tongue and tastes. ⦠jivhaƱca paį¹icca rase ca ā¦pe⦠Body consciousness arises dependent on the body and touches. ⦠kÄyaƱca paį¹icca phoį¹į¹habbe ca ā¦pe⦠Mind consciousness arises dependent on the mind and ideas. The meeting of the three is contact. manaƱca paį¹icca dhamme ca uppajjati manoviƱƱÄį¹aį¹. Tiį¹į¹aį¹ saį¹ gati phasso. Contact is a requirement for feeling. PhassapaccayÄ vedanÄ; Feeling is a requirement for craving. ⦠vedanÄpaccayÄ taį¹hÄ. This is the origin of suffering. Ayaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, dukkhassa samudayo.
And what is the disappearance of suffering? Katamo ca, bhikkhave, dukkhassa atthaį¹ gamo? Eye consciousness arises dependent on the eye and sights. The meeting of the three is contact. CakkhuƱca paį¹icca rÅ«pe ca uppajjati cakkhuviƱƱÄį¹aį¹. Tiį¹į¹aį¹ saį¹ gati phasso. Contact is a requirement for feeling. PhassapaccayÄ vedanÄ; Feeling is a requirement for craving. vedanÄpaccayÄ taį¹hÄ. When that craving fades away and ceases with nothing left over, grasping ceases. TassÄyeva taį¹hÄya asesavirÄganirodhÄ upÄdÄnanirodho; When grasping ceases, continued existence ceases. upÄdÄnanirodhÄ bhavanirodho; When continued existence ceases, rebirth ceases. bhavanirodhÄ jÄtinirodho; When rebirth ceases, old age and death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress cease. jÄtinirodhÄ jarÄmaraį¹aį¹ sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupÄyÄsÄ nirujjhanti. That is how this entire mass of suffering ceases. Evametassa kevalassa dukkhakkhandhassa nirodho hoti. This is the disappearance of suffering. Ayaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, dukkhassa atthaį¹ gamo.
