Suffering Dukkhasutta

At Sāvatthī. Sāvatthiyaṁ viharati.

ā€œMendicants, I will teach you the origin and disappearance of suffering. ā€œDukkhassa, bhikkhave, samudayaƱca atthaį¹…gamaƱca desessāmi. Listen and apply your mind well, I will speak.ā€ Taṁ suṇātha, sādhukaṁ manasi karotha, bhāsissāmÄ«ā€ti.

ā€œYes, sir,ā€ they replied. ā€œEvaṁ, bhanteā€ti kho te bhikkhÅ« bhagavato paccassosuṁ. The Buddha said this: Bhagavā etadavoca:

ā€œAnd what, mendicants, is the origin of suffering? ā€œKatamo ca, bhikkhave, dukkhassa samudayo? Eye consciousness arises dependent on the eye and sights. The meeting of the three is contact. CakkhuƱca paį¹­icca rÅ«pe ca uppajjati cakkhuviññāṇaṁ. Tiṇṇaṁ saį¹…gati phasso. Contact is a requirement for feeling. Phassapaccayā vedanā; Feeling is a requirement for craving. … vedanāpaccayā taṇhā. This is the origin of suffering. Ayaṁ kho, bhikkhave, dukkhassa samudayo.

Ear consciousness arises dependent on the ear and sounds. … SotaƱca paį¹­icca sadde ca uppajjati sotaviññāṇaṁ …pe… Nose consciousness arises dependent on the nose and smells. … ghānaƱca paį¹­icca gandhe ca …pe… Tongue consciousness arises dependent on the tongue and tastes. … jivhaƱca paį¹­icca rase ca …pe… Body consciousness arises dependent on the body and touches. … kāyaƱca paį¹­icca phoį¹­į¹­habbe ca …pe… Mind consciousness arises dependent on the mind and ideas. The meeting of the three is contact. manaƱca paį¹­icca dhamme ca uppajjati manoviññāṇaṁ. Tiṇṇaṁ saį¹…gati phasso. Contact is a requirement for feeling. And what is the disappearance of suffering? Katamo ca, bhikkhave, dukkhassa atthaį¹…gamo? Eye consciousness arises dependent on the eye and sights. The meeting of the three is contact. CakkhuƱca paį¹­icca rÅ«pe ca uppajjati cakkhuviññāṇaṁ. Tiṇṇaṁ saį¹…gati phasso. Contact is a requirement for feeling. Phassapaccayā vedanā; Feeling is a requirement for craving. vedanāpaccayā taṇhā. When that craving fades away and ceases with nothing left over, grasping ceases. Tassāyeva taṇhāya asesavirāganirodhā upādānanirodho; When grasping ceases, continued existence ceases. upādānanirodhā bhavanirodho; When continued existence ceases, rebirth ceases. bhavanirodhā jātinirodho; When rebirth ceases, old age and death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress cease. jātinirodhā jarāmaraṇaṁ sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsā nirujjhanti. That is how this entire mass of suffering ceases. Evametassa kevalassa dukkhakkhandhassa nirodho hoti. This is the disappearance of suffering. Ayaṁ kho, bhikkhave, dukkhassa atthaį¹…gamo.
