The World Lokasutta

At Sāvatthī. Sāvatthiyaṁ viharati.

ā€œMendicants, I will teach you the origin and disappearance of the world. ā€œLokassa, bhikkhave, samudayaƱca atthaį¹…gamaƱca desessāmi. Listen and apply your mind well, I will speak.ā€ Taṁ suṇātha, sādhukaṁ manasi karotha, bhāsissāmÄ«ā€ti.

ā€œYes, sir,ā€ they replied. ā€œEvaṁ, bhanteā€ti kho te bhikkhÅ« bhagavato paccassosuṁ. The Buddha said this: Bhagavā etadavoca:

ā€œAnd what, mendicants, is the origin of the world? ā€œKatamo ca, bhikkhave, lokassa samudayo? Eye consciousness arises dependent on the eye and sights. The meeting of the three is contact. CakkhuƱca paį¹­icca rÅ«pe ca uppajjati cakkhuviññāṇaṁ. Tiṇṇaṁ saį¹…gati phasso. Contact is a requirement for feeling. Phassapaccayā vedanā; Feeling is a requirement for craving. vedanāpaccayā taṇhā; Craving is a requirement for grasping. taṇhāpaccayā upādānaṁ; Grasping is a requirement for continued existence. upādānapaccayā bhavo; Continued existence is a requirement for rebirth. bhavapaccayā jāti; Rebirth is a requirement for old age and death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress to come to be. jātipaccayā jarāmaraṇaṁ sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsā sambhavanti. This is the origin of the world. Ayaṁ kho, bhikkhave, lokassa samudayo.

Ear consciousness arises dependent on the ear and sounds. … SotaƱca paį¹­icca sadde ca …pe… Nose consciousness arises dependent on the nose and smells. … ghānaƱca paį¹­icca gandhe ca … Tongue consciousness arises dependent on the tongue and tastes. … jivhaƱca paį¹­icca rase ca … Body consciousness arises dependent on the body and touches. … kāyaƱca paį¹­icca phoį¹­į¹­habbe ca … Mind consciousness arises dependent on the mind and ideas. The meeting of the three is contact. manaƱca paį¹­icca dhamme ca uppajjati manoviññāṇaṁ. Tiṇṇaṁ saį¹…gati phasso. And what is the ending of the world? Katamo ca, bhikkhave, lokassa atthaį¹…gamo? Eye consciousness arises dependent on the eye and sights. The meeting of the three is contact. When that craving fades away and ceases with nothing left over, grasping ceases. Tassāyeva taṇhāya asesavirāganirodhā upādānanirodho; When grasping ceases, continued existence ceases. … upādānanirodhā bhavanirodho …pe… That is how this entire mass of suffering ceases. evametassa kevalassa dukkhakkhandhassa nirodho hoti. This is the ending of the world. Ayaṁ kho, bhikkhave, lokassa atthaį¹…gamo.
