A Fingernail Nakhasikhasutta
At SÄvatthÄ«. SÄvatthiyaį¹ viharati.
Then the Buddha, picking up a little bit of dirt on his fingernail, addressed the mendicants: Atha kho bhagavÄ parittaį¹ nakhasikhÄyaį¹ paį¹suį¹ ÄropetvÄ bhikkhÅ« Ämantesi: āWhat do you think, mendicants? āTaį¹ kiį¹ maƱƱatha, bhikkhave, Which is more: the little bit of dirt on my fingernail, or this great earth?ā katamaį¹ nu kho bahutaraį¹, yo cÄyaį¹ mayÄ paritto nakhasikhÄyaį¹ paį¹su Äropito yÄ cÄyaį¹ mahÄpathavÄ«āti?
āSir, the great earth is far more. āEtadeva, bhante, bahutaraį¹ yadidaį¹ mahÄpathavÄ«. The little bit of dirt on your fingernail is tiny. Appamattakoyaį¹ bhagavatÄ paritto nakhasikhÄyaį¹ paį¹su Äropito. Compared to the great earth, it doesnāt count, thereās no comparison, itās not worth a fraction.ā Saį¹ khampi na upeti upanidhimpi na upeti kalabhÄgampi na upeti mahÄpathaviį¹ upanidhÄya bhagavatÄ paritto nakhasikhÄyaį¹ paį¹su Äropitoāti.
āIn the same way the sentient beings reborn as humans are few, āEvameva kho, bhikkhave, appakÄ te sattÄ ye manussesu paccÄjÄyanti; while those not reborn as humans are many. atha kho eteyeva bahutarÄ sattÄ ye aƱƱatra manussehi paccÄjÄyanti.
So you should train like this: TasmÄtiha, bhikkhave, evaį¹ sikkhitabbaį¹: āWe will stay diligent.ā āappamattÄ viharissÄmÄāti. Thatās how you should train.ā EvaƱhi vo, bhikkhave, sikkhitabbanāti.
