Liable To Originate Samudayadhammasutta

At Sāvatthī. Sāvatthinidānaṁ.

Then a mendicant went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him: Atha kho aƱƱataro bhikkhu yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā …pe… ekamantaṁ nisinno kho so bhikkhu bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:

ā€œSir, they speak of this thing called ā€˜ignorance’. ā€œā€˜avijjā, avijjā’ti, bhante, vuccati. What is ignorance? Katamā nu kho, bhante, avijjā; And how is an ignorant person defined?ā€ kittāvatā ca avijjāgato hotÄ«ā€ti?

ā€œMendicant, it’s when an unlearned ordinary person doesn’t truly understand form, which is liable to originate, as form which is liable to originate. ā€œIdha, bhikkhu, assutavā puthujjano samudayadhammaṁ rÅ«paṁ ā€˜samudayadhammaṁ rÅ«pan’ti yathābhÅ«taṁ nappajānāti; They don’t truly understand form, which is liable to fall, as form which is liable to fall. vayadhammaṁ rÅ«paṁ ā€˜vayadhammaṁ rÅ«pan’ti yathābhÅ«taṁ nappajānāti; They don’t truly understand form, which is liable to originate and fall, as form which is liable to originate and fall. samudayavayadhammaṁ rÅ«paṁ ā€˜samudayavayadhammaṁ rÅ«pan’ti yathābhÅ«taṁ nappajānāti.

They don’t truly understand feeling … Samudayadhammaṁ vedanaṁ ā€˜samudayadhammā vedanā’ti yathābhÅ«taṁ nappajānāti; vayadhammaṁ vedanaṁ ā€˜vayadhammā vedanā’ti yathābhÅ«taṁ nappajānāti; samudayavayadhammaṁ vedanaṁ ā€˜samudayavayadhammā vedanā’ti yathābhÅ«taṁ nappajānāti. perception … Samudayadhammaṁ saƱƱaṁ …pe… choices … samudayadhamme saį¹…khāre ā€˜samudayadhammā saį¹…khārā’ti yathābhÅ«taṁ nappajānāti; vayadhamme saį¹…khāre ā€˜vayadhammā saį¹…khārā’ti yathābhÅ«taṁ nappajānāti; samudayavayadhamme saį¹…khāre ā€˜samudayavayadhammā saį¹…khārā’ti yathābhÅ«taṁ nappajānāti. consciousness, which is liable to originate, as consciousness which is liable to originate. Samudayadhammaṁ viññāṇaṁ ā€˜samudayadhammaṁ viññāṇan’ti yathābhÅ«taṁ nappajānāti; They don’t truly understand consciousness, which is liable to fall, as consciousness which is liable to fall. vayadhammaṁ viññāṇaṁ ā€˜vayadhammaṁ viññāṇan’ti yathābhÅ«taṁ nappajānāti; They don’t truly understand consciousness, which is liable to originate and fall, as consciousness which is liable to originate and fall. samudayavayadhammaṁ viññāṇaṁ ā€˜samudayavayadhammaṁ viññāṇan’ti yathābhÅ«taṁ nappajānāti.

This is called ignorance. Ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhu, avijjā; And this is how an ignorant person is defined.ā€ ettāvatā ca avijjāgato hotÄ«ā€ti.

When he said this, the mendicant said to the Buddha: Evaṁ vutte, so bhikkhu bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:

ā€œSir, they speak of this thing called ā€˜knowledge’. ā€œā€˜vijjā, vijjā’ti, bhante, vuccati. What is knowledge? Katamā nu kho, bhante, vijjā; And how is a knowledgeable person defined?ā€ kittāvatā ca vijjāgato hotÄ«ā€ti?

ā€œMendicant, it’s when a learned noble disciple truly understands form, which is liable to originate, as form which is liable to originate. ā€œIdha, bhikkhu, sutavā ariyasāvako samudayadhammaṁ rÅ«paṁ ā€˜samudayadhammaṁ rÅ«pan’ti yathābhÅ«taṁ pajānāti; They truly understand form, which is liable to fall, as form which is liable to fall. vayadhammaṁ rÅ«paṁ ā€˜vayadhammaṁ rÅ«pan’ti yathābhÅ«taṁ pajānāti; They truly understand form, which is liable to originate and vanish, as form which is liable to originate and vanish. samudayavayadhammaṁ rÅ«paṁ ā€˜samudayavayadhammaṁ rÅ«pan’ti yathābhÅ«taṁ pajānāti.
