Liable To Originate Samudayadhammasutta
At SÄvatthÄ«. SÄvatthinidÄnaį¹.
Then a mendicant went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him: Atha kho aƱƱataro bhikkhu yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹ kami; upasaį¹ kamitvÄ ā¦pe⦠ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho so bhikkhu bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca:
āSir, they speak of this thing called āignoranceā. āāavijjÄ, avijjÄāti, bhante, vuccati. What is ignorance? KatamÄ nu kho, bhante, avijjÄ; And how is an ignorant person defined?ā kittÄvatÄ ca avijjÄgato hotÄ«āti?
āMendicant, itās when an unlearned ordinary person doesnāt truly understand form, which is liable to originate, as form which is liable to originate. āIdha, bhikkhu, assutavÄ puthujjano samudayadhammaį¹ rÅ«paį¹ āsamudayadhammaį¹ rÅ«panāti yathÄbhÅ«taį¹ nappajÄnÄti; They donāt truly understand form, which is liable to fall, as form which is liable to fall. vayadhammaį¹ rÅ«paį¹ āvayadhammaį¹ rÅ«panāti yathÄbhÅ«taį¹ nappajÄnÄti; They donāt truly understand form, which is liable to originate and fall, as form which is liable to originate and fall. samudayavayadhammaį¹ rÅ«paį¹ āsamudayavayadhammaį¹ rÅ«panāti yathÄbhÅ«taį¹ nappajÄnÄti.

Samudayadhammaį¹ viƱƱÄį¹aį¹ āsamudayadhammaį¹ viƱƱÄį¹anāti yathÄbhÅ«taį¹ nappajÄnÄti; They donāt truly understand consciousness, which is liable to fall, as consciousness which is liable to fall. vayadhammaį¹ viƱƱÄį¹aį¹ āvayadhammaį¹ viƱƱÄį¹anāti yathÄbhÅ«taį¹ nappajÄnÄti; They donāt truly understand consciousness, which is liable to originate and fall, as consciousness which is liable to originate and fall. samudayavayadhammaį¹ viƱƱÄį¹aį¹ āsamudayavayadhammaį¹ viƱƱÄį¹anāti yathÄbhÅ«taį¹ nappajÄnÄti.
This is called ignorance. Ayaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhu, avijjÄ; And this is how an ignorant person is defined.ā ettÄvatÄ ca avijjÄgato hotÄ«āti.
When he said this, the mendicant said to the Buddha: Evaį¹ vutte, so bhikkhu bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca:
āSir, they speak of this thing called āknowledgeā. āāvijjÄ, vijjÄāti, bhante, vuccati. What is knowledge? KatamÄ nu kho, bhante, vijjÄ; And how is a knowledgeable person defined?ā kittÄvatÄ ca vijjÄgato hotÄ«āti?
āMendicant, itās when a learned noble disciple truly understands form, which is liable to originate, as form which is liable to originate. āIdha, bhikkhu, sutavÄ ariyasÄvako samudayadhammaį¹ rÅ«paį¹ āsamudayadhammaį¹ rÅ«panāti yathÄbhÅ«taį¹ pajÄnÄti; They truly understand form, which is liable to fall, as form which is liable to fall. vayadhammaį¹ rÅ«paį¹ āvayadhammaį¹ rÅ«panāti yathÄbhÅ«taį¹ pajÄnÄti; They truly understand form, which is liable to originate and vanish, as form which is liable to originate and vanish. samudayavayadhammaį¹ rÅ«paį¹ āsamudayavayadhammaį¹ rÅ«panāti yathÄbhÅ«taį¹ pajÄnÄti.
