The Perfected Ones Arahantasutta

At Sāvatthī. Sāvatthinidānaṁ.

ā€œMendicants, form is impermanent. ā€œRÅ«paṁ, bhikkhave, aniccaṁ. What’s impermanent is suffering. Yadaniccaṁ taṁ dukkhaṁ; What’s suffering is not-self. yaṁ dukkhaṁ tadanattā; And what’s not-self should be truly seen with right understanding like this: ā€˜This is not mine, I am not this, this is not my self.’ yadanattā taṁ ā€˜netaṁ mama, nesohamasmi, na meso attā’ti evametaṁ yathābhÅ«taṁ sammappaƱƱāya daį¹­į¹­habbaṁ.

Consciousness is impermanent. viññāṇaṁ aniccaṁ. What’s impermanent is suffering. Yadaniccaṁ taṁ dukkhaṁ; What’s suffering is not-self. yaṁ dukkhaṁ tadanattā; And what’s not-self should be truly seen with right understanding like this: ā€˜This is not mine, I am not this, this is not my self.’ yadanattā taṁ ā€˜netaṁ mama, nesohamasmi, na meso attā’ti evametaṁ yathābhÅ«taṁ sammappaƱƱāya daį¹­į¹­habbaṁ.

Seeing this, a learned noble disciple grows disillusioned with form, feeling, perception, choices, and consciousness. Evaṁ passaṁ, bhikkhave, sutavā ariyasāvako rÅ«pasmimpi nibbindati, vedanāyapi … saƱƱāyapi … saį¹…khāresupi … viññāṇasmimpi nibbindati. Being disillusioned, desire fades away. When desire fades away they’re freed. When they’re freed, they know they’re freed. Nibbindaṁ virajjati; virāgā vimuccati. Vimuttasmiṁ vimuttamiti ñāṇaṁ hoti.

They understand: ā€˜Rebirth is ended, the spiritual journey has been completed, what had to be done has been done, there is nothing further for this place.’ ā€˜Khīṇā jāti, vusitaṁ brahmacariyaṁ, kataṁ karaṇīyaṁ, nāparaṁ itthattāyā’ti pajānāti. As far as there are abodes of sentient beings, even up until the pinnacle of existence, the perfected ones are the foremost and the best.ā€ Yāvatā, bhikkhave, sattāvāsā, yāvatā bhavaggaṁ, ete aggā, ete seį¹­į¹­hā lokasmiṁ yadidaṁ arahantoā€ti.

That is what the Buddha said. Idamavoca bhagavā. Then the Holy One, the Teacher, went on to say: Idaṁ vatvāna sugato athāparaṁ etadavoca satthā:

ā€œOh! How happy are the perfected ones! ā€œSukhino vata arahanto, Craving is not found in them, taṇhā tesaṁ na vijjati; the conceit ā€˜I am’ is cut off, Asmimāno samucchinno, and the net of delusion is shattered. mohajālaṁ padālitaṁ.

They’ve attained imperturbability, Anejaṁ te anuppattā, their minds are unclouded, cittaṁ tesaṁ anāvilaṁ; nothing in the world clings to them, Loke anupalittā te, manifesting divinity, undefiled. brahmabhÅ«tā anāsavā.

Completely understanding the five aggregates, PaƱcakkhandhe pariƱƱāya, their domain is the seven good qualities. satta saddhammagocarā; Those true persons are praiseworthy, Pasaṁsiyā sappurisā, the Buddha’s true-born sons. puttā buddhassa orasā.

Endowed with the seven gems, Sattaratanasampannā, and trained in the three trainings, Tīsu sikkhāsu sikkhitā; the great heroes live on, Anuvicaranti mahāvīrā, with fear and dread given up. Pahīnabhayabheravā.

Endowed with ten factors, Dasahaį¹…gehi sampannā, those giants have immersion. mahānāgā samāhitā; These are the best in the world, Ete kho seį¹­į¹­hā lokasmiṁ, craving is not found in them. taṇhā tesaṁ na vijjati.

The adept’s knowledge has arisen: Asekhañāṇamuppannaṁ, ā€˜This bag of bones is my last.’ antimoyaṁ samussayo; They are independent of others Yo sāro brahmacariyassa, in the core of the spiritual path. tasmiṁ aparapaccayā.

Unwavering in the face of discriminations, Vidhāsu na vikampanti, they’re freed from future lives. vippamuttā punabbhavā; They’ve reached the level of the tamed, DantabhÅ«mimanuppattā, in the world, they’re the winners. te loke vijitāvino.

Above, below, all round, Uddhaṁ tiriyaṁ apācÄ«naṁ, relishing is not found in them. nandÄ« tesaṁ na vijjati; They roar their lion’s roar: Nadanti te sÄ«hanādaṁ, ā€˜The awakened are supreme in the world!ā€™ā€ buddhā loke anuttarÄā€ti.
