Now at that time Venerable Tissaāthe Buddhaās cousin on his fatherās sideāinformed several mendicants: Tena kho pana samayena ÄyasmÄ tisso bhagavato pitucchÄputto sambahulÄnaį¹ bhikkhÅ«naį¹ evamÄroceti:
āReverends, my body feels like itās drugged. Iām disorientated, the teachings donāt spring to mind, and dullness and drowsiness fill my mind. I lead the spiritual life dissatisfied, and have doubts about the teachings.ā āapi me, Ävuso, madhurakajÄto viya kÄyo; disÄpi me na pakkhÄyanti; dhammÄpi maį¹ na paį¹ibhanti; thinamiddhaƱca me cittaį¹ pariyÄdÄya tiį¹į¹hati; anabhirato ca brahmacariyaį¹ carÄmi; hoti ca me dhammesu vicikicchÄāti.
Then several mendicants went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and told him what had happened. Atha kho sambahulÄ bhikkhÅ« yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹ kamiį¹su; upasaį¹ kamitvÄ bhagavantaį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«diį¹su. Ekamantaį¹ nisinnÄ kho te bhikkhÅ« bhagavantaį¹ etadavocuį¹: āÄyasmÄ, bhante, tisso bhagavato pitucchÄputto sambahulÄnaį¹ bhikkhÅ«naį¹ evamÄroceti: āapi me, Ävuso, madhurakajÄto viya kÄyo; disÄpi me na pakkhÄyanti; dhammÄpi maį¹ na paį¹ibhanti; thinamiddhaƱca me cittaį¹ pariyÄdÄya tiį¹į¹hati; anabhirato ca brahmacariyaį¹ carÄmi; hoti ca me dhammesu vicikicchÄāāti.
So the Buddha addressed one of the monks, Atha kho bhagavÄ aƱƱataraį¹ bhikkhuį¹ Ämantesi: āPlease, monk, in my name tell the mendicant Tissa that the Teacher summons him.ā āehi tvaį¹, bhikkhu, mama vacanena tissaį¹ bhikkhuį¹ ÄmantehÄ«āti.
āYes, sir,ā that monk replied. He went to Tissa and said to him, āEvaį¹, bhanteāti kho so bhikkhu bhagavato paį¹issutvÄ yenÄyasmÄ tisso tenupasaį¹ kami; upasaį¹ kamitvÄ Äyasmantaį¹ tissaį¹ etadavoca: āReverend Tissa, the teacher summons you.ā āsatthÄ taį¹, Ävuso tissa, ÄmantetÄ«āti.
āYes, reverend,ā Tissa replied. He went to the Buddha, bowed, and sat down to one side. The Buddha said to him: āEvamÄvusoāti kho ÄyasmÄ tisso tassa bhikkhuno paį¹issutvÄ yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹ kami; upasaį¹ kamitvÄ bhagavantaį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinnaį¹ kho Äyasmantaį¹ tissaį¹ bhagavÄ etadavoca:
āIs it really true, Tissa, that you informed several mendicants that āsaccaį¹ kira tvaį¹, tissa, sambahulÄnaį¹ bhikkhÅ«naį¹ evamÄrocesi: your body feels like itās drugged ⦠and you have doubts about the teachings?ā āapi me, Ävuso, madhurakajÄto viya kÄyo ā¦pe⦠hoti ca me dhammesu vicikicchÄāāti?
āYes, sir.ā āEvaį¹, bhanteā.
āWhat do you think, Tissa? āTaį¹ kiį¹ maƱƱasi, tissa, If youāre not rid of greed, desire, fondness, thirst, passion, and craving for form, when that form decays and perishes, will it give rise to sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress?ā rÅ«pe avigatarÄgassa avigatacchandassa avigatapemassa avigatapipÄsassa avigatapariįø·Ähassa avigatataį¹hassa, tassa rÅ«passa vipariį¹ÄmaƱƱathÄbhÄvÄ uppajjanti sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupÄyÄsÄāti?
āYes, sir.ā āEvaį¹, bhanteā.
āGood, good, Tissa! āSÄdhu sÄdhu, tissa. Thatās how it is, Tissa, EvaƱhetaį¹, tissa, hoti. when youāre not rid of greed for form. YathÄ taį¹ rÅ«pe avigatarÄgassa ā¦
If youāre not rid of greed for feeling ⦠vedanÄya ⦠perception ⦠saƱƱÄya ⦠choices ⦠saį¹ khÄresu avigatarÄgassa ā¦pe⦠tesaį¹ saį¹ khÄrÄnaį¹ vipariį¹ÄmaƱƱathÄbhÄvÄ uppajjanti sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupÄyÄsÄāti? āEvaį¹, bhanteā. āSÄdhu sÄdhu, tissa. EvaƱhetaį¹, tissa, hoti. consciousness, when that consciousness decays and perishes, will it give rise to sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress?ā YathÄ taį¹ saį¹ khÄresu anigatarÄgassa, viƱƱÄį¹e avigatarÄgassa avigatacchandassa avigatapemassa avigatapipÄsassa avigatapariįø·Ähassa avigatataį¹hassa, tassa viƱƱÄį¹assa vipariį¹ÄmaƱƱathÄbhÄvÄ uppajjanti sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupÄyÄsÄāti?

What do you think, Tissa? What do you think, Tissa? Taį¹ kiį¹ maƱƱasi, tissa, Is form permanent or impermanent?ā rÅ«paį¹ niccaį¹ vÄ aniccaį¹ vÄāti?
āImpermanent, sir.ā āAniccaį¹, bhanteā.
āIs feeling ⦠āVedanÄ ā¦ perception ⦠saĆ±Ć±Ä ā¦ choices ⦠saį¹ khÄrÄ ā¦ consciousness permanent or impermanent?ā viƱƱÄį¹aį¹ niccaį¹ vÄ aniccaį¹ vÄāti?
āImpermanent, sir.ā āAniccaį¹, bhanteā.
āSo you should truly see ⦠āTasmÄtiha ā¦pe⦠Seeing this ⦠evaį¹ passaį¹ ā¦pe⦠They understand: ā⦠there is nothing further for this place.ā nÄparaį¹ itthattÄyÄti pajÄnÄti.
Suppose, Tissa, there were two individuals. SeyyathÄpi, tissa, dve purisÄāOne was not skilled in the path, the other was. eko puriso amaggakusalo, eko puriso maggakusalo. The one not skilled in the path would question the one skilled in the path, Tamenaį¹ so amaggakusalo puriso amuį¹ maggakusalaį¹ purisaį¹ maggaį¹ puccheyya. who would reply: So evaį¹ vadeyya: āCome, my man, this is the path. āehi, bho purisa, ayaį¹ maggo. Go down it an hour, Tena muhuttaį¹ gaccha. and youāll see a fork in the road. Ignore the left, and take the right-hand path. Tena muhuttaį¹ gantvÄ dakkhissasi dvedhÄpathaį¹, tattha vÄmaį¹ muƱcitvÄ dakkhiį¹aį¹ gaį¹hÄhi. Go an hour more, Tena muhuttaį¹ gaccha. and youāll see a dense forest grove. Tena muhuttaį¹ gantvÄ dakkhissasi tibbaį¹ vanasaį¹įøaį¹. Go an hour more, Tena muhuttaį¹ gaccha. and youāll see an expanse of low-lying marshes. Tena muhuttaį¹ gantvÄ dakkhissasi mahantaį¹ ninnaį¹ pallalaį¹. Go an hour more, Tena muhuttaį¹ gaccha. and youāll see a large, steep cliff. Tena muhuttaį¹ gantvÄ dakkhissasi sobbhaį¹ papÄtaį¹. Go an hour more, Tena muhuttaį¹ gaccha. and youāll see level, cleared parkland.ā Tena muhuttaį¹ gantvÄ dakkhissasi samaį¹ bhÅ«mibhÄgaį¹ ramaį¹Ä«yanāti.
Iāve made up this simile to make a point. UpamÄ kho myÄyaį¹, tissa, katÄ atthassa viƱƱÄpanÄya. And this is what it means. Ayaį¹ cevettha attho:
āA person who is not skilled in the pathā is a term for an ordinary unlearned person. āpuriso amaggakusaloāti kho, tissa, puthujjanassetaį¹ adhivacanaį¹.
āA person who is skilled in the pathā is a term for the Realized One, the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha. āPuriso maggakusaloāti kho, tissa, tathÄgatassetaį¹ adhivacanaį¹ arahato sammÄsambuddhassa.
āA fork in the roadā is a term for doubt. āDvedhÄpathoāti kho, tissa, vicikicchÄyetaį¹ adhivacanaį¹.
āThe left-hand pathā is a term for the wrong eightfold path, that is, āVÄmo maggoāti kho, tissa, aį¹į¹haį¹ gikassetaį¹ micchÄmaggassa adhivacanaį¹, seyyathidaį¹āwrong view ⦠wrong immersion. micchÄdiį¹į¹hiyÄ ā¦pe⦠micchÄsamÄdhissa.
āThe right-hand pathā is a term for the noble eightfold path, that is, āDakkhiį¹o maggoāti kho, tissa, ariyassetaį¹ aį¹į¹haį¹ gikassa maggassa adhivacanaį¹, seyyathidaį¹āright view ⦠right immersion. sammÄdiį¹į¹hiyÄ ā¦pe⦠sammÄsamÄdhissa.
āA dense forest groveā is a term for ignorance. āTibbo vanasaį¹įøoāti kho, tissa, avijjÄyetaį¹ adhivacanaį¹.
āAn expanse of low-lying marshesā is a term for sensual pleasures. āMahantaį¹ ninnaį¹ pallalanāti kho, tissa, kÄmÄnametaį¹ adhivacanaį¹.
āA large, steep cliffā is a term for anger and distress. āSobbho papÄtoāti kho, tissa, kodhÅ«pÄyÄsassetaį¹ adhivacanaį¹.
āLevel, cleared parklandā is a term for extinguishment. āSamo bhÅ«mibhÄgo ramaį¹Ä«yoāti kho, tissa, nibbÄnassetaį¹ adhivacanaį¹.
Rejoice, Tissa, rejoice! Abhirama, tissa, abhirama, tissa. I am here with advice, with support, with instruction.ā AhamovÄdena ahamanuggahena ahamanusÄsaniyÄāti.
That is what the Buddha said. Idamavoca bhagavÄ. Satisfied, Venerable Tissa approved what the Buddha said. Attamano ÄyasmÄ tisso bhagavato bhÄsitaį¹ abhinandÄ«ti.
