Seated to one side, that mendicant said to the Buddha: Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho so bhikkhu bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca:
āSir, what is the cause, what is the reason why someone, when their body breaks up, after death, is reborn in the company of the gods of the clouds?ā āko nu kho, bhante, hetu, ko paccayo, yena midhekacco kÄyassa bhedÄ paraį¹ maraį¹Ä valÄhakakÄyikÄnaį¹ devÄnaį¹ sahabyataį¹ upapajjatÄ«āti?
āMendicant, itās when someone does good things by way of body, speech, and mind. āIdha, bhikkhu, ekacco kÄyena sucaritaį¹ carati, vÄcÄya sucaritaį¹ carati, manasÄ sucaritaį¹ carati. And theyāve heard: Tassa sutaį¹ hoti: āThe gods of the clouds are long-lived, beautiful, and very happy.ā āvalÄhakakÄyikÄ devÄ dÄ«ghÄyukÄ vaį¹į¹avanto sukhabahulÄāti. They think: Tassa evaį¹ hoti: āIf only, when my body breaks up, after death, I would be reborn in the company of the gods of the clouds!ā āaho vatÄhaį¹ kÄyassa bhedÄ paraį¹ maraį¹Ä valÄhakakÄyikÄnaį¹ devÄnaį¹ sahabyataį¹ upapajjeyyanāti. When their body breaks up, after death, theyāre reborn in the company of the gods of the clouds. So kÄyassa bhedÄ paraį¹ maraį¹Ä valÄhakakÄyikÄnaį¹ devÄnaį¹ sahabyataį¹ upapajjati. This is the cause, this is the reason why someone, when their body breaks up, after death, is reborn in the company of the gods of the clouds.ā Ayaį¹ kho, bhikkhu, hetu, ayaį¹ paccayo, yena midhekacco kÄyassa bhedÄ paraį¹ maraį¹Ä valÄhakakÄyikÄnaį¹ devÄnaį¹ sahabyataį¹ upapajjatÄ«āti.
