Trees Rukkhasutta
āMendicants, suppose a tree slants, slopes, and inclines to the east. āSeyyathÄpi, bhikkhave, rukkho pÄcÄ«naninno pÄcÄ«napoį¹o pÄcÄ«napabbhÄro. If it was cut off at the root, where would it fall?ā So mÅ«lacchinno katamena papateyyÄāti?
āSir, it would fall in the direction that it slants, slopes, and inclines.ā āYena, bhante, ninno yena poį¹o yena pabbhÄroāti.
āIn the same way, a mendicant who develops and cultivates the noble eightfold path slants, slopes, and inclines to extinguishment. āEvameva kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu ariyaį¹ aį¹į¹haį¹ gikaį¹ maggaį¹ bhÄvento ariyaį¹ aį¹į¹haį¹ gikaį¹ maggaį¹ bahulÄ«karonto nibbÄnaninno hoti nibbÄnapoį¹o nibbÄnapabbhÄro.
And how does a mendicant who develops the noble eightfold path slant, slope, and incline to extinguishment? KathaƱca, bhikkhave, bhikkhu ariyaį¹ aį¹į¹haį¹ gikaį¹ maggaį¹ bhÄvento ariyaį¹ aį¹į¹haį¹ gikaį¹ maggaį¹ bahulÄ«karonto nibbÄnaninno hoti nibbÄnapoį¹o nibbÄnapabbhÄro? Itās when a mendicant develops right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right immersion, which rely on seclusion, fading away, and cessation, and ripen as letting go.
