“There are these three states of existence. “Tayome, bhikkhave, bhavā. What three? Katame tayo? Existence in the sensual realm, the realm of luminous form, and the formless realm. Kāmabhavo, rūpabhavo, arūpabhavo—These are the three states of existence. ime kho, bhikkhave, tayo bhavā.

The noble eightfold path should be developed for the direct knowledge, complete understanding, finishing, and giving up of these three states of existence.” Imesaṁ kho, bhikkhave, tiṇṇannaṁ bhavānaṁ abhiññāya pariññāya parikkhayāya pahānāya …pe… ayaṁ ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo bhāvetabbo”ti.
