Floods, etc. Oghādisutta

ā€œMendicants, there are five higher fetters. ā€œPaƱcimāni, bhikkhave, uddhambhāgiyāni saṁyojanāni. What five? Katamāni paƱca? Desire for rebirth in the realm of luminous form, desire for rebirth in the formless realm, conceit, restlessness, and ignorance. RÅ«parāgo, arÅ«parāgo, māno, uddhaccaṁ, avijjā—These are the five higher fetters. imāni kho, bhikkhave, paƱcuddhambhāgiyāni saṁyojanāni.

The five faculties should be developed for the direct knowledge, complete understanding, finishing, and giving up of these five higher fetters. Imesaṁ kho, bhikkhave, paƱcannaṁ uddhambhāgiyānaṁ saṁyojanānaṁ abhiƱƱāya pariƱƱāya parikkhayāya pahānāya paƱcindriyāni bhāvetabbāni. What five? Katamāni paƱca? It’s when a mendicant develops the faculties of faith, energy, mindfulness, immersion, and wisdom, which rely on seclusion, fading away, and cessation, and ripen as letting go. Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu saddhindriyaṁ bhāveti vivekanissitaṁ virāganissitaṁ nirodhanissitaṁ vossaggapariṇāmiṁ …pe… paƱƱindriyaṁ bhāveti vivekanissitaṁ virāganissitaṁ nirodhanissitaṁ vossaggapariṇāmiṁ.

These five faculties should be developed for the direct knowledge, complete understanding, finishing, and giving up of these five higher fetters.ā€ Imesaṁ kho, bhikkhave, paƱcannaṁ uddhambhāgiyānaṁ saṁyojanānaṁ abhiƱƱāya pariƱƱāya parikkhayāya pahānāya imāni paƱcindriyāni bhāvetabbānÄ«ā€ti.

Tassuddānaṁ

Floods, yokes, grasping, Ogho yogo upādānaṁ, ties, and underlying tendencies, ganthā anusayena ca; kinds of sensual stimulation, hindrances, Kāmaguṇā nÄ«varaṇā, aggregates, and fetters high and low. khandhā oruddhambhāgiyāti.
