Floods, Etc. Oghādisutta

ā€œMendicants, there are five higher fetters. ā€œPaƱcimāni, bhikkhave, uddhambhāgiyāni saṁyojanāni. What five? Katamāni paƱca? Desire for rebirth in the realm of luminous form, desire for rebirth in the formless realm, conceit, restlessness, and ignorance. RÅ«parāgo, arÅ«parāgo, māno, uddhaccaṁ, avijjā—These are the five higher fetters. imāni kho, bhikkhave, paƱcuddhambhāgiyāni saṁyojanāni.

The four bases of psychic power should be developed for the direct knowledge, complete understanding, finishing, and giving up of these five higher fetters. Imesaṁ kho, bhikkhave, paƱcannaṁ uddhambhāgiyānaṁ saṁyojanānaṁ abhiƱƱāya pariƱƱāya parikkhayāya pahānāya cattāro iddhipādā bhāvetabbā. What four? Katame cattāro? It’s when a mendicant develops the basis of psychic power that has immersion due to enthusiasm … Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu chandasamādhippadhānasaį¹…khārasamannāgataṁ iddhipādaṁ bhāveti, energy … vÄ«riyasamādhi …pe… mental development … cittasamādhi … inquiry, and active effort. vÄ«maṁsāsamādhippadhānasaį¹…khārasamannāgataṁ iddhipādaṁ bhāveti. These four bases of psychic power should be developed for the direct knowledge, complete understanding, finishing, and giving up of these five higher fetters.ā€ Imesaṁ kho, bhikkhave, paƱcannaṁ uddhambhāgiyānaṁ saṁyojanānaṁ abhiƱƱāya pariƱƱāya parikkhayāya pahānāya ime cattāro iddhipādā bhāvetabbÄā€ti.

Tassuddānaṁ

Floods, yokes, grasping, Ogho yogo upādānaṁ, ties, and underlying tendencies, ganthā anusayena ca; kinds of sensual stimulation, hindrances, Kāmaguṇā nÄ«varaṇā, aggregates, and fetters high and low. khandhā oruddhambhāgiyāti.
