The Chamberlains Thapatisutta
At SÄvatthÄ«. SÄvatthinidÄnaį¹. At that time several mendicants were making a robe for the Buddha, thinking that Tena kho pana samayena sambahulÄ bhikkhÅ« bhagavato cÄ«varakammaį¹ karonti: when his robe was finished and the three months of the rains residence had passed the Buddha would set out wandering. āniį¹į¹hitacÄ«varo bhagavÄ temÄsaccayena cÄrikaį¹ pakkamissatÄ«āti. Now at that time the chamberlains Isidatta and PurÄį¹a were residing in SÄdhuka on some business. Tena kho pana samayena isidattapurÄį¹Ä thapatayo sÄdhuke paį¹ivasanti kenacideva karaį¹Ä«yena. They heard about this. Assosuį¹ kho isidattapurÄį¹Ä thapatayo: āsambahulÄ kira bhikkhÅ« bhagavato cÄ«varakammaį¹ karonti: āniį¹į¹hitacÄ«varo bhagavÄ temÄsaccayena cÄrikaį¹ pakkamissatÄ«āāti.
So they posted someone on the road, saying: Atha kho isidattapurÄį¹Ä thapatayo magge purisaį¹ į¹hapesuį¹:
āMy man, let us know when you see the Blessed One coming, the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha.ā āyadÄ tvaį¹, ambho purisa, passeyyÄsi bhagavantaį¹ Ägacchantaį¹ arahantaį¹ sammÄsambuddhaį¹, atha amhÄkaį¹ ÄroceyyÄsÄ«āti. And that person stood there for two or three days before they saw the Buddha coming off in the distance. DvÄ«hatÄ«haį¹ į¹hito kho so puriso addasa bhagavantaį¹ dÅ«ratova Ägacchantaį¹. When they saw him, they went to the chamberlains and said: DisvÄna yena isidattapurÄį¹Ä thapatayo tenupasaį¹ kami; upasaį¹ kamitvÄ isidattapurÄį¹e thapatayo etadavoca:
āSirs, the Blessed One, the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha is coming. āayaį¹ so, bhante, bhagavÄ Ägacchati arahaį¹ sammÄsambuddho. Please come at your convenience.ā YassadÄni kÄlaį¹ maƱƱathÄāti.
Then the chamberlains went up to the Buddha, bowed, and followed behind him. Atha kho isidattapurÄį¹Ä thapatayo yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹ kamiį¹su; upasaį¹ kamitvÄ bhagavantaį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ bhagavantaį¹ piį¹į¹hito piį¹į¹hito anubandhiį¹su. And then the Buddha left the road, went to the root of a certain tree, and sat down on the seat spread out. Atha kho bhagavÄ maggÄ okkamma yena aƱƱataraį¹ rukkhamÅ«laį¹ tenupasaį¹ kami; upasaį¹ kamitvÄ paƱƱatte Äsane nisÄ«di. The chamberlains Isidatta and PurÄį¹a bowed, sat down to one side, IsidattapurÄį¹Ä thapatayo bhagavantaį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«diį¹su. and said to the Buddha: Ekamantaį¹ nisinnÄ kho te isidattapurÄį¹Ä thapatayo bhagavantaį¹ etadavocuį¹:

āSir, itās when King Pasenadi of Kosala wants to go and visit a park. We have to harness and prepare his royal elephants. Then we have to seat his dear and beloved wives on the elephants, one in front of us, and one behind. āIdha mayaį¹, bhante, yadÄ rÄjÄ pasenadi kosalo uyyÄnabhÅ«miį¹ niyyÄtukÄmo hoti, ye te raƱƱo pasenadissa kosalassa nÄgÄ opavayhÄ te kappetvÄ, yÄ tÄ raƱƱo pasenadissa kosalassa pajÄpatiyo piyÄ manÄpÄ tÄ ekaį¹ purato ekaį¹ pacchato nisÄ«dÄpema. Now at that time we must look after the elephants, the sisters, and ourselves. Tasmiį¹ kho pana, bhante, samaye nÄgopi rakkhitabbo hoti, tÄpi bhaginiyo rakkhitabbÄ honti, attÄpi rakkhitabbo hoti. But we donāt recall having a bad thought regarding those sisters. Na kho pana mayaį¹, bhante, abhijÄnÄma tÄsu bhaginÄ«su pÄpakaį¹ cittaį¹ uppÄdetÄ.
