With BhÄradvÄja the Fiend Asurindakasutta
At one time the Buddha was staying near RÄjagaha, in the Bamboo Grove, the squirrelsā feeding ground. Ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavÄ rÄjagahe viharati veįø·uvane kalandakanivÄpe. The brahmin BhÄradvÄja the Fiend heard a rumor to the effect that Assosi kho asurindakabhÄradvÄjo brÄhmaį¹o: a brahmin of the BhÄradvÄja clan had gone forth from the lay life to homelessness in the presence of the ascetic Gotama. Angry and displeased he went to the Buddha and abused and insulted him with rude, harsh words. ābhÄradvÄjagotto brÄhmaį¹o kira samaį¹assa gotamassa santike agÄrasmÄ anagÄriyaį¹ pabbajitoāti kupito anattamano yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹ kami; upasaį¹ kamitvÄ bhagavantaį¹ asabbhÄhi pharusÄhi vÄcÄhi akkosati paribhÄsati.
But when he said this, the Buddha kept silent. Evaį¹ vutte, bhagavÄ tuį¹hÄ« ahosi.
Then BhÄradvÄja the Fiend said to the Buddha, Atha kho asurindakabhÄradvÄjo brÄhmaį¹o bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: āYouāre beaten, ascetic, youāre beaten!ā ājitosi, samaį¹a, jitosi, samaį¹Äāti.
āāHa! I won!ā thinks the fool, āJayaį¹ ve maƱƱati bÄlo, when speaking with harsh words. vÄcÄya pharusaį¹ bhaį¹aį¹; The victory for one who understands JayaƱcevassa taį¹ hoti, is that very endurance. yÄ titikkhÄ vijÄnato.
When you get angry at an angry person Tasseva tena pÄpiyo, you just make things worse for yourself. yo kuddhaį¹ paį¹ikujjhati; When you donāt get angry at an angry person Kuddhaį¹ appaį¹ikujjhanto, you win a battle hard to win. saį¹ gÄmaį¹ jeti dujjayaį¹.
When you know that the other is angry, Ubhinnamatthaį¹ carati, you act for the good of both attano ca parassa ca; yourself and the other Paraį¹ saį¹ kupitaṠñatvÄ, if youāre mindful and stay calm. yo sato upasammati.
People inexpert in Dhamma Ubhinnaį¹ tikicchantÄnaį¹, consider one who heals both attano ca parassa ca; oneself and the other JanÄ maƱƱanti bÄloti, to be a fool.ā ye dhammassa akovidÄāti.
When he had spoken, BhÄradvÄja the Fiend said to the Buddha, Evaį¹ vutte, asurindakabhÄradvÄjo brÄhmaį¹o bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: āExcellent, worthy Gotama! ā¦ā ⦠āabhikkantaį¹, bho gotama ā¦pe⦠abbhaƱƱÄsi. And Venerable BhÄradvÄja became one of the perfected. AƱƱataro ca panÄyasmÄ bhÄradvÄjo arahataį¹ ahosÄ«ti.
