With Bhāradvāja the Bitter Bilaį¹…gikasutta

At one time the Buddha was staying near Rājagaha, in the Bamboo Grove, the squirrels’ feeding ground. Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā rājagahe viharati veįø·uvane kalandakanivāpe. The brahmin Bhāradvāja the Bitter heard a rumor that Assosi kho bilaį¹…gikabhāradvājo brāhmaṇo: a brahmin of the Bhāradvāja clan had gone forth from the lay life to homelessness in the presence of the ascetic Gotama. Angry and displeased he went to the Buddha and stood silently to one side. ā€œbhāradvājagotto kira brāhmaṇo samaṇassa gotamassa santike agārasmā anagāriyaṁ pabbajitoā€ti kupito anattamano yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā tuṇhÄ«bhÅ«to ekamantaṁ aį¹į¹hāsi.

Then the Buddha, knowing Bhāradvāja the Bitter’s train of thought, addressed him in verse: Atha kho bhagavā bilaį¹…gikassa bhāradvājassa brāhmaṇassa cetasā cetoparivitakkamaƱƱāya bilaį¹…gikaṁ bhāradvājaṁ brāhmaṇaṁ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi:

ā€œWhoever wrongs a man who has done no wrong, ā€œYo appaduį¹į¹hassa narassa dussati, a pure man who has not a blemish, Suddhassa posassa anaį¹…gaṇassa; the evil backfires on the fool, Tameva bālaṁ pacceti pāpaṁ, like fine dust thrown upwind.ā€ Sukhumo rajo paį¹ivātaṁva khittoā€ti.

When he said this, the brahmin Bhāradvāja the Bitter said to the Buddha, Evaṁ vutte, bilaį¹…gikabhāradvājo brāhmaṇo bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: ā€œExcellent, worthy Gotama! ā€¦ā€ … ā€œabhikkantaṁ, bho gotama …pe… abbhaƱƱāsi. And Venerable Bhāradvāja became one of the perfected. AƱƱataro ca panāyasmā bhāradvājo arahataṁ ahosÄ«ti.
