The Chapter on Welcome 14. Santhāravagga

ā€œThere are these two kinds of welcome. ā€œDveme, bhikkhave, santhārā. What two? Katame dve? Welcome in things of the flesh and welcome in the teaching. Āmisasanthāro ca dhammasanthāro ca. These are the two kinds of welcome. Ime kho, bhikkhave, dve santhārā. The better of these two kinds of welcome is the welcome in the teaching.ā€ Etadaggaṁ, bhikkhave, imesaṁ dvinnaṁ santhārānaṁ yadidaṁ dhammasanthāroā€ti.

ā€œThere are these two kinds of hospitality. ā€œDveme, bhikkhave, paį¹­isanthārā. What two? Katame dve? Hospitality in things of the flesh and hospitality in the teaching. Āmisapaį¹­isanthāro ca dhammapaį¹­isanthāro ca. These are the two kinds of hospitality. Ime kho, bhikkhave, dve paį¹­isanthārā. The better of these two kinds of hospitality is hospitality in the teaching.ā€ Etadaggaṁ, bhikkhave, imesaṁ dvinnaṁ paį¹­isanthārānaṁ yadidaṁ dhammapaį¹­isanthāroā€ti.

ā€œThere are these two quests. ā€œDvemā, bhikkhave, esanā. What two? Katamā dve? The quest for things of the flesh and the quest for the teaching. Āmisesanā ca dhammesanā ca. These are the two quests. Imā kho, bhikkhave, dve esanā. The better of these two quests is the quest for the teaching.ā€ Etadaggaṁ, bhikkhave, imāsaṁ dvinnaṁ esanānaṁ yadidaṁ dhammesanÄā€ti.

ā€œThere are these two searches. ā€œDvemā, bhikkhave, pariyesanā. What two? Katamā dve? The search for things of the flesh and the search for the teaching. Āmisapariyesanā ca dhammapariyesanā ca. These are the two searches. Imā kho, bhikkhave, dve pariyesanā. The better of these two searches is the search for the teaching.ā€ Etadaggaṁ, bhikkhave, imāsaṁ dvinnaṁ pariyesanānaṁ yadidaṁ dhammapariyesanÄā€ti.

ā€œThere are these two kinds of seeking. ā€œDvemā, bhikkhave, pariyeį¹­į¹­hiyo. What two? Katamā dve? Seeking for things of the flesh and seeking for the teaching. Āmisapariyeį¹­į¹­hi ca dhammapariyeį¹­į¹­hi ca. These are the two kinds of seeking. Imā kho, bhikkhave, dve pariyeį¹­į¹­hiyo. The better of these two kinds of seeking is seeking for the teaching.ā€ Etadaggaṁ, bhikkhave, imāsaṁ dvinnaṁ pariyeį¹­į¹­hÄ«naṁ yadidaṁ dhammapariyeį¹­į¹­hÄ«ā€ti.

ā€œThere are these two kinds of worship. ā€œDvemā, bhikkhave, pÅ«jā. What two? Katamā dve? Worship of things of the flesh and worship of the teaching. ĀmisapÅ«jā ca dhammapÅ«jā ca. These are the two kinds of worship. Imā kho, bhikkhave, dve pÅ«jā. The better of these two kinds of worship is worship of the teaching.ā€ Etadaggaṁ, bhikkhave, imāsaṁ dvinnaṁ pÅ«jānaṁ yadidaṁ dhammapÅ«jÄā€ti.

ā€œThere are these two ways of serving guests. ā€œDvemāni, bhikkhave, ātitheyyāni. What two? Katamāni dve? Serving guests with things of the flesh and serving guests with the teaching. ĀmisātitheyyaƱca dhammātitheyyaƱca. These are the two ways of serving guests. Imāni kho, bhikkhave, dve ātitheyyāni. The better of these two ways of serving guests is to serve them with the teaching.ā€ Etadaggaṁ, bhikkhave, imesaṁ dvinnaṁ ātitheyyānaṁ yadidaṁ dhammātitheyyanā€ti.

ā€œThere are, mendicants, these two successes. ā€œDvemā, bhikkhave, iddhiyo. What two? Katamā dve? Success in things of the flesh and success in the teaching. Āmisiddhi ca dhammiddhi ca. These are the two successes. Imā kho, bhikkhave, dve iddhiyo. The better of these two successes is success in the teaching.ā€ Etadaggaṁ, bhikkhave, imāsaṁ dvinnaṁ iddhÄ«naṁ yadidaṁ dhammiddhÄ«ā€ti.

ā€œThere are, mendicants, these two kinds of growth. ā€œDvemā, bhikkhave, vuddhiyo. What two? Katamā dve? Growth in things of the flesh and growth in the teaching. Āmisavuddhi ca dhammavuddhi ca. These are the two kinds of growth. Imā kho, bhikkhave, dve vuddhiyo. The better of these two kinds of growth is growth in the teaching.ā€ Etadaggaṁ, bhikkhave, imāsaṁ dvinnaṁ vuddhÄ«naṁ yadidaṁ dhammavuddhÄ«ā€ti.

ā€œThere are these two treasures. ā€œDvemāni, bhikkhave, ratanāni. What two? Katamāni dve? The treasure of things of the flesh and the treasure of the teaching. ĀmisaratanaƱca dhammaratanaƱca. These are the two treasures. Imāni kho, bhikkhave, dve ratanāni. The better of these two treasures is the treasure of the teaching.ā€ Etadaggaṁ, bhikkhave, imesaṁ dvinnaṁ ratanānaṁ yadidaṁ dhammaratananā€ti.

ā€œThere are these two kinds of accumulation. ā€œDveme, bhikkhave, sannicayā. What two? Katame dve? Accumulation of things of the flesh and accumulation of the teaching. Āmisasannicayo ca dhammasannicayo ca. These are the two kinds of accumulation. Ime kho, bhikkhave, dve sannicayā. The better of these two kinds of accumulation is the accumulation of the teaching.ā€ Etadaggaṁ, bhikkhave, imesaṁ dvinnaṁ sannicayānaṁ yadidaṁ dhammasannicayoā€ti.

ā€œThere are, mendicants, these two kinds of increase. ā€œDvemāni, bhikkhave, vepullāni. What two? Katamāni dve? Increase in things of the flesh and increase in the teaching. ĀmisavepullaƱca dhammavepullaƱca. These are the two kinds of increase. Imāni kho, bhikkhave, dve vepullāni. The better of these two kinds of increase is increase in the teaching.ā€ Etadaggaṁ, bhikkhave, imesaṁ dvinnaṁ vepullānaṁ yadidaṁ dhammavepullanā€ti.
