Lying Musāvādasutta

This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard. Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ:

“Mendicants, for an individual person who transgresses in one thing, there is no bad deed they would not do, I say. “Ekadhammaṁ atītassa, bhikkhave, purisapuggalassa nāhaṁ tassa kiñci pāpakammaṁ akaraṇīyanti vadāmi. What one thing? Katamaṁ ekadhammaṁ? It is this: telling a deliberate lie.” Yadidaṁ, bhikkhave, sampajānamusāvādo”ti.

The Buddha spoke this matter. Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca. On this it is said: Tatthetaṁ iti vuccati:

“When a personage, spurning the hereafter, “Ekadhammaṁ atītassa, transgresses in just one thing—musāvādissa jantuno; lying—Vitiṇṇaparalokassa, there is no evil they would not do.” natthi pāpaṁ akāriyan”ti.

This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard. Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti.

Pañcamaṁ.
