Faculties Indriyasutta

This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard. Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ:

ā€œMendicants, there are these three faculties. ā€œTīṇimāni, bhikkhave, indriyāni. What three? Katamāni tīṇi? The faculty of understanding that one’s enlightenment is imminent. The faculty of enlightenment. The faculty of one who is enlightened. AnaƱƱātaƱƱassāmÄ«tindriyaṁ, aƱƱindriyaṁ, aƱƱātāvindriyaṁ—These are the three faculties.ā€ imāni kho, bhikkhave, tīṇi indriyānÄ«ā€ti.

The Buddha spoke this matter. Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca. On this it is said: Tatthetaṁ iti vuccati:

ā€œAs a trainee trains, ā€œSekhassa sikkhamānassa, following the straight road, ujumaggānusārino; first they know about ending; Khayasmiṁ paį¹hamaṁ ñāṇaṁ, enlightenment follows in the same lifetime. tato aƱƱā anantarā.

Then the knowledge comes Tato aƱƱāvimuttassa, to such a one, freed through enlightenment, ñāṇaṁ ve hoti tādino; with the end of the fetters of continued existence: Akuppā me vimuttÄ«ti, ā€˜My freedom is unshakable.’ bhavasaṁyojanakkhayā.

Accomplished in the faculties, Sa ve indriyasampanno, peaceful, in love with the state of peace, santo santipade rato; they bear their final body, Dhāreti antimaṁ dehaṁ, having vanquished Māra with his legions.ā€ jetvā māraṁ savāhininā€ti.

This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard. Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti.

Tatiyaṁ.
