More Peaceful Santatarasutta
This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard. VuttaƱhetaį¹ bhagavatÄ vuttamarahatÄti me sutaį¹:
āMendicants, formless states are more peaceful than states of form; cessation is more peaceful than formless states.ā āRÅ«pehi, bhikkhave, arÅ«pÄ santatarÄ, arÅ«pehi nirodho santataroāti.
The Buddha spoke this matter. Etamatthaį¹ bhagavÄ avoca. On this it is said: Tatthetaį¹ iti vuccati:
āThere are beings in the realm of luminous form, āYe ca rÅ«pÅ«pagÄ sattÄ, and others stuck in the formless. ye ca arÅ«paį¹į¹hÄyino; Not understanding cessation, Nirodhaį¹ appajÄnantÄ, they return in future lives. ÄgantÄro punabbhavaį¹.
But the people who completely understand form, Ye ca rÅ«pe pariƱƱÄya, not stuck in the formless, arÅ«pesu asaį¹į¹hitÄ; released in cessationāNirodhe ye vimuccanti, they are conquerors of death. te janÄ maccuhÄyino.
Having directly experienced <j>the element free of death, KÄyena amatadhÄtuį¹, free of attachments; phusayitvÄ nirÅ«padhiį¹; having realised relinquishment Upadhippaį¹inissaggaį¹, of attachments, the undefiled sacchikatvÄ anÄsavo; fully awakened Buddha teaches Deseti sammÄsambuddho, the sorrowless, stainless state.ā asokaį¹ virajaį¹ padanāti.
This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard. Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatÄ, iti me sutanti.
Catutthaį¹.
