āMendicants, when mindfulness of breathing is developed and cultivated itās very fruitful and beneficial. āÄnÄpÄnassati, bhikkhave, bhÄvitÄ bahulÄ«katÄ mahapphalÄ hoti mahÄnisaį¹sÄ. And how is mindfulness of breathing developed and cultivated to be very fruitful and beneficial? Kathaį¹ bhÄvitÄ ca, bhikkhave, ÄnÄpÄnassati kathaį¹ bahulÄ«katÄ mahapphalÄ hoti mahÄnisaį¹sÄ?
Itās when a mendicantāgone to a wilderness, or to the root of a tree, or to an empty hutāsits down cross-legged, sets their body straight, and establishes mindfulness in their presence. Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu araƱƱagato vÄ rukkhamÅ«lagato vÄ suƱƱÄgÄragato vÄ nisÄ«dati pallaį¹ kaį¹ ÄbhujitvÄ ujuį¹ kÄyaį¹ paį¹idhÄya parimukhaį¹ satiį¹ upaį¹į¹hapetvÄ.
Just mindful, they breathe in. Mindful, they breathe out. ⦠So satova assasati, satova passasati ā¦peā¦
They practice like this: āIāll breathe in observing letting go.ā They practice like this: āIāll breathe out observing letting go.ā āpaį¹inissaggÄnupassÄ« assasissÄmÄ«āti sikkhati, āpaį¹inissaggÄnupassÄ« passasissÄmÄ«āti sikkhati.
Mindfulness of breathing, when developed and cultivated in this way, is very fruitful and beneficial. Evaį¹ bhÄvitÄ kho, bhikkhave, ÄnÄpÄnassati evaį¹ bahulÄ«katÄ mahapphalÄ hoti mahÄnisaį¹sÄ.
When mindfulness of breathing is developed and cultivated in this way you can expect seven fruits and benefits. Evaį¹ bhÄvitÄya kho, bhikkhave, ÄnÄpÄnassatiyÄ evaį¹ bahulÄ«katÄya satta phalÄ sattÄnisaį¹sÄ pÄį¹ikaį¹ khÄ. What seven? Katame satta phalÄ sattÄnisaį¹sÄ? You attain enlightenment early on in this very life. Diį¹į¹heva dhamme paį¹ikacca aƱƱaį¹ ÄrÄdheti; no ce diį¹į¹heva dhamme paį¹ikacca aƱƱaį¹ ÄrÄdheti. If not, you attain enlightenment at the time of death. Atha maraį¹akÄle aƱƱaį¹ ÄrÄdheti; no ce diį¹į¹heva dhamme paį¹ikacca aƱƱaį¹ ÄrÄdheti, no ce maraį¹akÄle aƱƱaį¹ ÄrÄdheti. If not, with the ending of the five lower fetters youāre extinguished in between one life and the next ⦠Atha paƱcannaį¹ orambhÄgiyÄnaį¹ saį¹yojanÄnaį¹ parikkhayÄ antarÄparinibbÄyÄ« hoti ⦠youāre extinguished upon landing ⦠upahaccaparinibbÄyÄ« hoti ⦠youāre extinguished without extra effort ⦠asaį¹ khÄraparinibbÄyÄ« hoti ⦠youāre extinguished with extra effort ⦠sasaį¹ khÄraparinibbÄyÄ« hoti ⦠you head upstream, going to the Akaniį¹į¹ha realm ⦠uddhaį¹soto hoti akaniį¹į¹hagÄmÄ«āWhen mindfulness of breathing is developed and cultivated in this way you can expect these seven fruits and benefits.ā evaį¹ bhÄvitÄya kho, bhikkhave, ÄnÄpÄnassatiyÄ evaį¹ bahulÄ«katÄya ime satta phalÄ sattÄnisaį¹sÄ pÄį¹ikaį¹ khÄāti.
