Fruits (2nd) Dutiyaphalasutta

ā€œMendicants, when mindfulness of breathing is developed and cultivated it’s very fruitful and beneficial. ā€œÄ€nāpānassati, bhikkhave, bhāvitā bahulÄ«katā mahapphalā hoti mahānisaṁsā. And how is mindfulness of breathing developed and cultivated to be very fruitful and beneficial? Kathaṁ bhāvitā ca, bhikkhave, ānāpānassati kathaṁ bahulÄ«katā mahapphalā hoti mahānisaṁsā?

It’s when a mendicant—gone to a wilderness, or to the root of a tree, or to an empty hut—sits down cross-legged, sets their body straight, and establishes mindfulness in their presence. Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu araƱƱagato vā rukkhamÅ«lagato vā suƱƱāgāragato vā nisÄ«dati pallaį¹…kaṁ ābhujitvā ujuṁ kāyaṁ paṇidhāya parimukhaṁ satiṁ upaį¹į¹hapetvā.

Just mindful, they breathe in. Mindful, they breathe out. … So satova assasati, satova passasati …pe…

They practice like this: ā€˜I’ll breathe in observing letting go.’ They practice like this: ā€˜I’ll breathe out observing letting go.’ ā€˜paį¹inissaggānupassÄ« assasissāmī’ti sikkhati, ā€˜paį¹inissaggānupassÄ« passasissāmī’ti sikkhati.

Mindfulness of breathing, when developed and cultivated in this way, is very fruitful and beneficial. Evaṁ bhāvitā kho, bhikkhave, ānāpānassati evaṁ bahulīkatā mahapphalā hoti mahānisaṁsā.

When mindfulness of breathing is developed and cultivated in this way you can expect seven fruits and benefits. Evaṁ bhāvitāya kho, bhikkhave, ānāpānassatiyā evaṁ bahulÄ«katāya satta phalā sattānisaṁsā pāṭikaį¹…khā. What seven? Katame satta phalā sattānisaṁsā? You attain enlightenment early on in this very life. Diį¹į¹heva dhamme paį¹ikacca aƱƱaṁ ārādheti; no ce diį¹į¹heva dhamme paį¹ikacca aƱƱaṁ ārādheti. If not, you attain enlightenment at the time of death. Atha maraṇakāle aƱƱaṁ ārādheti; no ce diį¹į¹heva dhamme paį¹ikacca aƱƱaṁ ārādheti, no ce maraṇakāle aƱƱaṁ ārādheti. If not, with the ending of the five lower fetters you’re extinguished in between one life and the next … Atha paƱcannaṁ orambhāgiyānaṁ saṁyojanānaṁ parikkhayā antarāparinibbāyÄ« hoti … you’re extinguished upon landing … upahaccaparinibbāyÄ« hoti … you’re extinguished without extra effort … asaį¹…khāraparinibbāyÄ« hoti … you’re extinguished with extra effort … sasaį¹…khāraparinibbāyÄ« hoti … you head upstream, going to the Akaniį¹į¹ha realm … uddhaṁsoto hoti akaniį¹į¹hagāmī—When mindfulness of breathing is developed and cultivated in this way you can expect these seven fruits and benefits.ā€ evaṁ bhāvitāya kho, bhikkhave, ānāpānassatiyā evaṁ bahulÄ«katāya ime satta phalā sattānisaṁsā pāṭikaį¹…khāā€ti.
